Would it be possible to add an option to the map screen where the player could set the default movement speed for his units?
For example, if the player could see that his units were about to move into an urban area or a region of broken ground and suspected the possibilty of an ambush, with this option he could order all his units to move at slow speed. At the moment though, if you wish to give units "engage" orders they will default to fast speed and this may not suit either the terrain or the tactical situation, but the "scout" order may also not suit the tactical situation or produce the desired result.
So at the moment if you want units to move slowly, but use the "engage" AI routine, you have to set the route then reselect the route and change the speed setting (by which time the unit has already started to move). In a single player scenario with multiple units to control this can become a pretty heavy workload for the player (especially if the unit or vehicle under his direct control is in contact at the time).
Adding a default speed control option would give the player an extra level of flexability in the control of his units since he'd avoid the extra workload of having to set each route's speed manually (provided his judgement of the tactical situation he was facing was correct!), while still leaving the option to alter routes speed settings on the fly of necessary as we do at present.
Hope that made sense. I only got a couple of hours sleep last night and not much seems to at the moment!
