How can I get a .gif from my own files to be the picture associated with my profile???

In the Main Menu section, just above the Poll, is a link for Upload Avatar/Pic.

Follow that and you'll get prompted for the file to be uploaded. The limit size is 100x100 pixels, and smaller seems to work; I think my red dog is 94x96. If you upload a GIF, it will be used as your avatar to the left of your messages; if you upload a JPEG, it will be used in your profile. Pick the appropriate type and hit Upload.

If you have a GIF and want to use it in your profile, it has to be changed to JPEG format, which is easy - MSPaint, Photo Editor or any other half-decent graphics program can do it. Either pick Save As and select JPEG, or in some programs it's called Export. Note that JPEG doesn't support transparency, so if your GIF has a transparent background you'll get strange results when you convert it.
