Ok... this thing makes the original M1A1 thermal sight look like a kids toy. Is there any way to protect it from shell splinters besides turning it away from blasts? If not... dumb ass design! Something that expensive and important for the crew and it does not have a doghouse! Looks flimsy. Don't tell me that it can withstand 7.62mm fire either.

The CITV's armor cap is equivalent to the protection provided by the GPS "dog house". It's about 2"-3" in thickness all around with an additional 4"x4" lobe on either side of the sight aperture...weighs about the same too. IMHO I'd say the protection is equal to if not better than that of the Leo II commander's periscope. To be honest I didn't think too highly of the CITV's ballistic cap either, when I first saw it, but after removing one during a sight replacement I feel the protection is more than adequate.
