I saw a link at Simhq.com about a week ago regarding something called the Defense Combat Simulation Olympics. Apparently they are organizing lan-parties/tournaments for military sims and have service-members/veterans in attendance to help out. The group is in San Diego. They have recently opened a web-page; I posted, and there is some interest in SB (which seems to be right up their alley).
If anybody in the San Diego area is interested in checking it out here's the URL.

Might be an opportunity to convert some young impressionable minds to the Monopatchistic flock.
Does anyone know this guy? I guess this was a flop.

Well, the site is still up. It looks like a good idea, but there is no reports as to how it went.
Here is jist of the thread that was started by our friend Gary Owen.

Just curious
Saw a link to this site over at Simhq. Seems like a great concept. Just curious about which sims that you are planning to work with, and especially whether you are planning on doing anything with ground combat sims.

Yes we are. To some degree, we had ground combat in our competition this week in our competition that used Battlefield 1942. And, we are looking at likely using "SOCOM: Navy SEALs" in our next competition. We are talking with the local Navy SEAL headquarters asking them to support with having Navy SEALs come to our event.
As the Leagues take shape, I am sure that we will have a great deal of opinions people will voice on which games are best.

If you're interested in any combined manuever stuff, take a look at TacOps4, it's a battalion/brigade level command post exercise kinda game in actual use by the military. Pretty dry compared to the FPS games, but designed to be flexible as far as setting up and simulating command and control.
Another combined arms simulator is Steel Beasts. It's in use at West Point. Not much eye-candy yet (new graphics engine is being developed), but it's got incredibly faithful tank gunnery modeling. It's an excellent vehicle for training terrain analysis, unit co-ordination, and manuever. If you're interested in something like this, I could post your URL at the fansite to see if anybody near SD would be willing to help train.

I would appreciate it if you could post a link to us at the Steel Beast fan web site. We will add a tank competition to one of our upcoming competitions. I have talked to people at Army National Guard before. We could see about having them bring a tank and the actual experts to talk at the competition.

Given the strong interest, I will contact the guys over at SteelBeast and people at National Guard Recruiting to see about arranging. We just had another planning meeting today on our next event that will use "SOCOM: Navy SEALs". It looks highly probable that we will have live participation from the Navy SEAL community.
We are just starting to stand-up these events, so we are going to need a little grace as we ramp up over the next year.
Cheers,
Flack

The stated purpose of the "competition" is to get younger people (high school) interested in joining the armed services through military gaming competition.

Perhaps if they hadn't spent my tax dollars on America's Army.
