Could someone explain to me the real difference between the white and black polarity views in the TIS? I guess what I'm trying to understand is when and where would you use one over the other, in what kind of situation would one (in the sim and in real life) pick one polarity to use on the battlefield?

Cheers.

Different polarities can make targets show up differently. Normally switching polarities from one to another while scanning would be best. No polarity is perfect in and of itself. Switching from white hot, black hot and day sight in a scan would reduce the chances of a target being undetected.

It all comes down to the gunner's personal preference as to whether he preferes white hot or black hot. Lots of other factors can play a part into the decision as well. In theory the two should be equal, but from my experience as an Abrams gunner, I used white hot during more at night than black hot because I felt that the white hot allowed me to see the terrain better than the black hot view.

On the tank ranges at night I tended to prefer black hot over white hot. Depending on weather, air temperature and time of day, more often than not I would use the daylight sight.

I don't know it it will ever make it into any future patches, but if there was an ability to adjust the sensitivity, contrast and focus of the TIS, you would be able to see how changing the settings in those areas can help you determine which polarity you feel most comfortable with.

For SP PRO PE, I'd like the ability to change from a white reticle to a dark reticle as the dark reticle would help get center of visible mass aiming points much better than a white reticle on a white target. Hope this was of some help in answering your question.

Thanks for the answers guys, just what I was looking for and very helpful indeed. For my own personal preference in the sim, I'm tending to lean towards preferring the "black hot" polarity in the desert maps while preferring the "white hot" polarity in the forest maps.

Thanks, Dealer. Like the old auto ad says: "Ask the man who owns one."

Based on your post I gave white hot (which I had been ignoring) a try in a forest terrain and (as enigma said) it seems to work much better spotting vehicles in the trees. AND, as you pointed out, you get a much better view of the the roll of the terrain than in black hot. Black hot seems to work better in open country; the targets catch your eye much faster.

Really great tip, thank you!

Dealer's right, there are specific situations where white hot is preferable over black hot, and vice versa. Treat it as part of your target-scanning routine; if you're looking for something in the trees considering going white hot, if you're looking for something in the open, consider going black hot.

Amen regarding the contrasting for sensitivity!!!!

Also, switching periodically between white hot and black hot is good when you start to get eye strain.

only if you're using a too-bright TIS. any other case, the pupil is not the reason for the strain, and moving your head a little back and forth will help much more. another good technique to relax the eyes is to glare at the screen. you'll notice targets almost as well, and let your eyes rest for a little while.

aye to contrast&sensitivity!
