Can anyone explain to me what the difference is (in game) when you as commander give either order to the AI gunner? Does AI gunner actually do anything different?

Also, while I'm at it, the "battlesight" command makes the AI gunner shoot point blank and continually move to any targets in his sight without you (as TC) telling him to target...correct?

Thanks in advance.

"Fire": Fire at the exact target that you're tracking right now, but no other.

"Fire and adjust": Fire at this target, and the others in close vicinity. This would be the best command to give if you're facing a squad.

Aahh..okay...I'll test that out. Thanks.

One more quick one...doesn't the "battlesight" command do this as well? I thought I understand battlesight to tell the gunner to go to 1200 point blank range and hammer at everything in sight within that range.

This is from the tankers bible 3-20.12 or as the old Abrams tankers might know it as the new 17.12 .

EXECUTION
8-22. Once the crew responds to the first elements of the fire command, the TC will announce the execution. Before announcing the execution command, the TC and gunner or loader will mentally run through the confirmation procedures described in Chapter 6, Target Acquisition. As a minimum, the TC will reconfirm the target as hostile before firing; if there are multiple targets within the TC’s sector, he designates to the most dangerous target first. Three execution commands may be given:
Note. The TC must make sure the path of recoil is clear before giving the command of execution.

“FIRE.” The command “FIRE” tells the gunner to fire the gun. If the TC designates the gunner to a single target and is able to assist the gunner, he issues the command, “FIRE.” If the TC wants to delay firing, he will announce “AT MY COMMAND,” then announce “FIRE” when he is ready to engage.

“FIRE AND ADJUST.” If the TC cannot assist the gunner or loader in adjustment, he announces “FIRE AND ADJUST.” This tells the gunner or loader that he will not receive a subsequent fire command and must conduct the engagement on his own. If the TC continues to designate the gunner or loader to each target, then continues to scan his sector, he issues the command “FIRE AND ADJUST.”

We didn't use Fire and Adjust much on the M1A1s but its used in almost every fire command on the M1A2s The TC uses Fire and Adjust because when his gunner IDs a target then TC is now using the CITV (TC sight) to find the next target for the gunner to kill. So the TC is not looking at the 1st target that he gave his gunner. So if the gunner misses the target he will reengage that target with out the TC telling him where to adjust his sights or if the round was over the target or short of the target. The gunner has to work it out by himself to hit that target because the TC is not watching what the gunner is shooting.

FT. Hood has a good web page with a bunch of gunnery PDF.

What he said.

Basically, it's a hand-off. If the TC has something better to do, like shoot his .50 cal, tell the loader to shoot something, or, as Dragon says, scan with the CITV, he'll give the 'and adjust'. The gunner then has command of the engagement, and will perform his own sensing, ending with "Gunner complete"
