Was the driver alright? These photographs don't get mentioned much, but it's an incredible set of images that are included.

He looks fine to me...besides driving around with his hatch open that is. :) In truth the drivers hatch locks in that position and there's a keen retention strap on the right side of the hatch just in case; consider it the equivalent of the M1 TC's hatch open-protective.

Yes, that drivers hatch is locked in the first opened position. Not nprmal way to drive it tho but that is what it is. Nothing wrong with it. :) But there is no retention strap. That strap is lot of times placed there by the driver to make it easier to open the hatch from the outdside. I forbid my guys tho to have it on.

He's fine. Photo taken at 36 20' 09.25"N, 43 11' 07.10E, facing NNW, Jan 05. (I seem to recall about Jan 17th, but I'd need to check), shortly after a rather brisk firefight in which some 15 120mm rounds were expended and a whole bunch of 25mm. One Kiowa Warrior was forced down by a rather lucky shot. There are a couple of other pictures from the same incident in the slideshow. The vehicle is from C/2-2IN, 1ID, and was the tail end of a reinforcement column.

Thanks for the Info. The front end of the vehicle looks slightly sooted as if struck by something incendiary - I wondered if it had been damaged in some way.
There's a whole host of these pictures coming out of Iraq / Afghanistan, and I find them really interesting. Historically, they're priceless.

Yes there are lots of pics coming from the front line now.Plenty of burnt out M1,s around, mainly from secondary causes,i.e. it breaks down or is damaged and having the enemy nearby they destroy it to stop them from being captured and reused against your side.
