View Full Version : What's up with AI gunning?

Something really weird happened tonight. I'm a strong believer in using the terrain to your advantage. I had a series of T-80Us coming by. I waited until my scouts reported the first echelon showed me their left flanks before triggering the ambush. I was amazed how horrible my AI gunners were. One of my Brads got a TOW shot off (I don't know how, maybe some smoke protected it) but my M1s purely sucked.

Sorry about the order of the posted pictures... the after shot is first for some reason. Look at how we were completely trashed. Please note that the T-80s are flush against the minefield seeing how they just drove out of my kill-sack with only 3 hits (only 2 of which were kills).

Note how strong my force was, only 2 Brads the rest are M1A1 HAs. With a 2700 range to target. You can see here that I was completely concealed behind the hill... no one had advanced warning I was there. Not even enemy helos saw me.

You guys should have HEARD the shooting when I hit the trigger to unmask my tanks! It was... well.... the friggin' rockets red glare! I was amazed that the reds just kept on driving! What's the deal! I even had the difficulty on EASY so the odds were strongly in my favor.

What's with these TOW shots? Damn funny!

Looks like I tunneled underneath with a portable TOW!

It's damn funny when this happens but I wish the TC would have a little better AI to override to stop this from happening. It would be so cool if an audio file played "What the f***!!!! Hold your fire!" when this happened!

Are you sure that's not the top-attack function of the TOW 2B?

I haven't actually picked up SB Pro PE since the last upgrade, but I thought that was tossed in the package.

Yes, it must have been the TOW 2B. As the missile nears the target it rises and detonates downward.

As far as the horrible gunnery is concerned, the question is whether you started the scenario with a user profile that had a decent gunnery rating...?

5.9 seconds dude.

Cobra, I think what Ssnake meant was what is the percentage gunnery rating of the profile you were using when you loaded the mission. You can check this on the relevant profile page. Default rating IIRC is about 60%. This will have only increased if you've spent time on the gunnery range with that specific profile.

If you can hit 100% in 5.9 seconds that's great..... but if you've not done it with the profile you were using in this specific mission the 60% default will still apply and the AI gunnery will be inaccurate.

afaik, the gunnery defaults to the host.

Dam it - does that mean I need to spend more time on the range and then all my tanks will perform better?

I believe that is correct Charlie but I am not sure exactly how it is set-up and what I mean is this; If I practice gunnery in IFV, does that score only affect my blue side IFV which are controlled by AI or does that affect my AI tanks as well. If I practice tank gunnery, does that only affect the tanks and not the IFV's? Or is it one score takes care of all?

I've been wondering about this for a bit now.

Not really - all that matters is that you have a 100% hit ratio, the time doesn't effect anything.

"Enlist", go to tank gunnery, increase your own gunnery rating, when you play a mission after that the game will ask you to choose between the name that you "enlisted" as or Lt. Default. Now your AI units will share your gunnery rating, which is hopefully better than 60%!

Gentlemen.... as I have explained... I have a 100% hit rating already from the range and I STILL get gunners who need glasses. This is a very weird situation because I KNOW how the profile system works.

I'm looking for other explanations as to why these guys couldn't hit the side of a barn in this scenario.

I don't think that it is realistic to give a good explanation in hindsight, especially without knowing what exactly was going on. So far all that I know is that the missiles hit well and that your gunners missed a lot when a gazillion targets presented themselves simultaneously.

Yup! I've got a gunnery rating of 100% and my folks just keep tearing the enemy to pieces....

hi,

i recently played Bluewings mission "cavalry to the rescue" and i don't know why but AI gunner do not want to shot on tanks even if it's him who spotted it. (yes i order him to open fire).

this is the only mission where the gunner do not want to fire or take to much time to do it. I have to take his place and do the job myself. (this is very short range shot).

I came home today and verified my AI gunning status on my profile. I then started a new one with a trip to the range with the M1A1.

Seconds don't mean anything to the game but it does to me.

This is NOT a gunnery profile problem.

It has been my experience that AI gunners are fine, in fact down right deadly as long as the targets are NOT: retreating or closing at high speed, especially at an oblique angle, or the targets are not moving down hill at a speed faster than say...halt. In these cases the AI gunners just can't hit 'em.
