I've just registered to the forum because I've just ordered SBP PE.

Some words of introduction: I'm French, 40, gamer (not military).

Some times ago, I searched the net for a tank sim. I did find SBP PE but I decided to delay any action due to the high price and no demo available.

Then some weeks ago, I bought Silent Hunter 3 (yes, SH3, while SH4 was being released :? ). I registered to the subsim forum and thus discovered the tanksim forum. Thanks to Skybird's explanations, links to resources provided, and impressed by ssnake's quick answers to my practical questions, I decided to enter the Leo and m1.

Why am I interested in a tank sim ? I played the Steel Panthers series for years, especially (Win)SPMBT and thus I developped a strong interest for MBTs and modern warfare.

Now I wanna drive and shoot MBTs, not only command them on the map a la maniere de SPMBT :)

Welcome to the SB Community. You will find that the developers stay involved with the forums, which is what i like most.

Matxer,

As a new member myself I should give you fair warning that this game and community can become very addictive. Hope to see you at a TGIT in the future. Bienvenue!

Welcome and I can attest to what the others have said in it becoming quite addictive.:) You will enjoy this sim, it has so much depth to it and is only getting better.

...but it was a quote from the first game ever that had sampled speech, the C64 classic "Impossible Mission".
Every level then started with the evil mastermind's command: Kill him, my robots!

The nice thing was, it had an overall game time countdown. You had to beat all 32 levels in 6 hours total, or else bad karma would happen to the world.

Greetings and welcome aboard!

You'll find the most helpful and knowledgeable community on this site!

The support here is top notch.

I'm a SH3 guy too. I recommend that you get the Grey Wolves Extreme Mod right from the beginning. It's a much better SH3 experience.

Thx all for these words of welcome !

You mean GWX (Grey Wolves eXpansion) ? Yes, I play that mod.

And now a 1st question: do u play with a joystick or the keyboard / mouse ?

From the FPS experience, it seems to me convenient to drive with the keyboard and shoot with the mouse.

And now a 1st question: do u play with a joystick and the keyboard / mouse.

It's a matter of taste, really. After all the years no consensual opinion has been formed. I started using joysticks, nowadays the mouse is good enough for me.

I too am an old Panthers player and new to the SB community........Fear not the price tag !!!! It is my feeling that my investment in SB Pro PE was returned in full within the first week of ownership courtesy of this community. My passion is for the Multiplayer side of games/sims and as such the people you play with are what makes the game not the other way around. I have no misconceptions in regrades to my current skill level as the learning curve is a steep one. What I have received from this community has been nothing but help, not one derogatory comment has been fired my way.

SB pro PE is far and away the best of the best when it comes to Tank sims, add to that this community and what you get is an unbeatable combination.

Hey Matxer, welcome on board.
If you want to play with some other french, please visit www.507rcc.leforum.eu
We play via Hamachi, and if you have some friends who want to test SB, they just have to install it, I lease (for free ;) ) some licences.

LOL, I recognised that instantly! :) Who could forget synthesised speech back in those days!!

I don't fear the price. In euros, I paid only EUR 93 including shipping. That's 'only' one a half the price of a console game.

Go Euro, go ! :)

If you're looking for a good SP ladder (in fact the best and the only one), have a look at The Blitz:

and the game lifetime is far much longer than usual games.

For sure! Especially with updates from time to time introducing new capabilities. Can hardly wait to see what the next update will include...

A French community would have two advantages for me:
* I love international online community but playing at 2 am GMT is just in the middle of the night for me...
* The SB French default key mapping is a mess and I'd like to know what French AZERTY keyboard users use as key mapping.

There's a strong German community in your time zone, check www.steelbeastspro.de.
As far as the keyboard layout is concerned, I recommend a look at the layout of the US keyboard as shown in the manual. Then rearrange the commands in a way that reflects the different keys in the same places. That's why there is such a thing as the keyboard customization tool. :)

Chances are the German community speaks German, not English.

I don't doubt it.
But on the spur of the moment, when the battle is in full swing and the stress is high, if 90% or more of the players are german native, would they shout orders in english or in their native tongue?

We build a system for communication in TS. All changing Channels... Platoon Leader and CO are all on the same Channel, Platoon Members/Gunners are in another Channel together with the Platoon Leader. Thats a easy way to give commands in a different Language. For my COīs and my self its not common to command in english, but its possible!

Example: You are the Gunner of 12A (Wingman of PL), so switch to your Platoonchannel and dont switch to Channel Command. Order are given to the PL, he gives his orders to his Platoon and your TC gives Commands to you in english.

One Problem is, we are leading in german doctrine and trying to use german shortcuts for communication.

Try it, you are not the first one.

I will when I'm ready for online play.

But I need much offline training before. :)
