Soldiers,

I will add in this thread all info + eventually the briefings and mission -files for C Troop and MP COOP mission 4.

This is what happened between 15th June 1988, 1200hrs - 2000hrs:

-1200 all 1st Squadron units (minus one immobilized tank left behind) were out of the 3rd Squadron's AOR.

-1215hrs 3rd Squadron established contact with enemy tanks and BMPs at Achum airfield.

-1400hrs 3rd Squadron in heavy contact with the enemy units. Enemy seems to be quite worn from the battle with 1st Squadron, and their initial momentum has been lost...

-1415hrs an enemy unit probing south from Achum stopped by 1st Squadron flank guard. The enemy was not very keen on pushing south, rather securing his own flank. Stalemate here...

-1500hrs 3rd Squadron still in heavy contact, enemy units recognized to be the main body of the enemy tank regiment, trying to exploit the hole created by the MRRs earlier.

-1530hrs 3rd Squadron starts to withdraw west in bounds. 1st Squadron AO silent, except the sporadic fire received from the E30 bridges, when C Troop tried to take a closer look. No casualties.

-1545hrs enemy POW taken at Luhden by A Troop personnel. Luhden reported being empty of enemy survivors...

-1600hrs enemy reached Meinsen and tried to continue to Berenbusch. Spiritless attack repelled.

-1623hrs 1st Squadron flank guard reports tank fire from the north, no contact, no 3rd Squadron units in the area.

-1627hrs 1st Squadron flank guard establish visual with a lone Abrams, speeding south and engaged with some unknown enemies.

-1631hrs 1st Squadron flank guard reports contact with an Apache Abrams from 1/A. The crew tells they were immobilized and laid low while the enemy main body moved past them, then they spent hours fixing their left track. Finally when they managed to get moving, they saw enemy trucks heading west, engaged them, and made a run for it. On their way they spotted enemy motor rifle platoon and an engineer unit creating minefields to cover their southern flank. Surprised, the enemy didn't manage to kill the Abrams.

-1635hrs 3rd Squadron K Troop "Killer" conducts a counter-attack through Bückeburg and establishes contact with 1st Squadron flank guard.

-1648hrs a series of loud explosions reported from the enemy positions at the E30 bridges.

-1700hrs 3rd Squadron reports they have managed to stop the enemy, suffering mediocre casualties. The enemy is digging in.

-1730hrs 3rd Squadron M Company "Mad Dog" conducts an unsuccesfull counter-attack to Meinsen, suffering heavy casualties. Stalemate reached in 3rd Squadron's AOR, both sides are well dug in, but not in condition to defeat the other one. Heavy artillery fires against Bückeburg.

-1747hrs C Troop dismounted scout section reports movement away from the E30 bridges.

-1845hrs C Troop reports the E30 bridges are destroyed, heavily mined and boobytrapped, and the enemy unit has disappeared from the bridge site.

-1930hrs C Troop is ordered to reconnoiter Buchholz, no sight of the enemy, except 2 abandoned, damaged BMPs that have been blown by their crews?

-1936hrs inaccurate mortar fire falls in on Buchholz. Firing continues for 10 minutes. No casualties. Rolfshagen is reported being empty of enemies.

-1945hrs Killer Troop relieves 1st Squadron flank guard, and deploys west of Krainhagen.

-2000hrs intercepted and decrypted enemy radio communication between a division CO and a battalion CO from 1600hrs: "Destroy all you can, pull back to defence line Borsch, and hold it at any cost". Intel people are quite sure this message is from a conversation between the attacking enemy division CO and the 2nd line ad-hoc battalion CO at the area around Auetal.

1st Squadron OOB was quickly reformed after pulling back from Achum. The OOB is currently:

Battlegroup Apache:

-CO (Brun), M1A1

-XO, Humvee

-1/A (Hedgehog), M113FO

-2/A (Induction, Silberwiese), 6x M3 BFV (all what's left from A and B Troop Bradleys + HQ Troop...)

-3/A (Trackpad), 4x M1A1 (old 4/A)

-4/A (Zipuli), 4x M1A1 (survivors of now disbanded Bandit Troop)

-5/A (assassin 7), 6x M1A1 (survivors of now disbanded Dragon Coy, 3 heavily damaged tanks were cannibalized for spares to get some of the less damaged tanks running!)

-6/A (Kingtiger), 1x Humvee, 2x M88 (1 added from B Troop), 1x M113repair, 2x M113med

-7/A, 4x M106A2 Mortar Carrier (A + B Troop Mortar Sections combined)

Recon Group Crazyhorse:

-CO (Gibsonm), M1A1

-XO, M3 BFV

-1/C, M113FO

-2/C, 6x BFV

-4/C, 3x M1A1 + 1x M1

-6/C, 1x Humvee, 1x M88, 1x M113repair

-7/C, 2x M106A2 Mortar Carrier

King Battery:

4x M109A6 Paladin SPA, 1 lost in counterbattery fire, 1 in repairs.

1st Squadron "Tiger" is preparing to attack east to reconnoiter enemy strenght, unit composition and intent and to push through these units to threaten enemy division's left flank, thus relieveing pressure from 3rd Squadron, and winning time for 1st Inf Div arriving in AO in 24hrs!

Ack.

Thought I'd end up with me and a bicycle.

Glad you could get this grouping together.

Every single vehicle from the original OOB, destroyed in any of the missions is still destroyed. These numbers here include all the damaged vehicles from previous missions (or with status "in repairs" from previous missions)...

So it's not a huge catasthrophy yet.

PS. Thanks to our and Muleskinners mechanics and the lack of active enemy measures against our Sqn, Mission 4 will have all vehicles repaired, rearmed and refueled... though some vehicles were, like said above, cannibalized for spares, even if they survived mission 3.

LOL, that's awesome! :)

15th June 1988, 2100hrs, Bad Eilsen. Orders to "Tiger" callsigns:

"Gentlemen,

The situation north of has grinded to a standstill on both sides. Casualties have been heavy, but the enemy division is stopped. It still controls the area north of us and we don't have enough strenght to deal with it, so it's going to be left for the heavy hitters later on... Aside from sporadic firing and artillery strikes, the battlefield is quiet.

East of us is, what we believe, a 2nd line Motor Rifle Battalion (-). C Troop fought against them today, and what we know now, is that their equipment is not the top of the line, but their fighting spirit seems high, and especially their infantry AT-weapons can hurt us bad! Currently we don't know the enemy force composition, deployment, nor strenght. But they are most likely holding the way to Lauenau, guarding the enemy main attack's left flank. Mines, scattered and laid, and AT-weapons are most likely found there. We also believe they are pretty well dug in.

Intent:

Tonight we will carry out an attack to defeat this enemy. We are to fully utilize the superior night vision and thermals we got to overcome the enemy and destroy his heavy equipment. Success here will open up a corridor to Lauenau, from where we can start engaging the division's "soft" parts, artillery, combat support, etc. as well as cut their main supply line to keep them combat ineffective for as long as we can!

This is done by first scouting the area east of us, finding the enemy deployment and planning targets for artillery and CAS. Then we will mount the offensive, supported by indirect fires and CAS, to neutralize the enemy and to penetrate through to Auetal.

Mission to units:

C Recon Group - recon the attack area starting 2250hrs, identify enemy strongpoints, minefields and composition. Send back a list of target reference points to Apache NLT 2355hrs. Avoid heavy contact and try to hide our intentions for as long as possible. If too much of your force and movement is revealed to the enemy, it is highly possible that they will raise the readiness and send in any reinforcements they got! Deploy to support by fire positions NLT 2359hrs to support Apache's main attack, choose the positions according to enemy deployment and your own tactical judgement. Prepare to move behind Apache and recon the route to Lauenau.

A Combat Group - attack in the direction of E30 east starting 16th June 0000hrs. Destroy any enemy defences you run into, and suppress the enemy not directly on your chosen route of advance. Take Auetal bridges. Prepare to continue the attack to Lauenau.

Support:

C will have only his own 2 mortars for this one, though using them should be avoided if you can.

The main attack will be supported by all 6 mortars we got, the 4 King Battery M109s and a pair of F-111s. The targets for the flyboys will be designated by Apache CO and FO, according to the intel and TRPs provided by Crazyhorse. The 111s have 8 x 500lbs bombs, so we will have 4 pre-planned targets for those babies. Also all King Battery's ICM fires will be pre-planned, as they are low on ICM munitions. They have enough of that stuff for 4 fire missions. HE and Smoke we got plenty!

Conditions:

It's cold, cloudy night, with light rain. This reduces visibility and means the night is dark as well. Let's use this to our advantage! We know the area east of us saw some heavy combat a day back, so there may be destroyed vehicles littering the landscape, so BE CAREFULL with your target identifying! Also watch the ground - there can be a lot of mines laid by the enemy, AND the US forces that retreated through this corridor!

Any questions?"

Gibson, here is your mission file. Time limit is 70 minutes. Have fun sneaking around!

Wilko,

Looking for mines in the rain and the dark.

I knew there would be a catch for being promoted.

Just waiting to get down to the hide and find out that everything is fixed except the TI. :)

SoM Back brief to follow.

Yeah, they managed to fix the TIs :)

And the rain isn't too bad, just a drizzle, but still visibility is under 2km...

So BRUN and HEDGEHOG... when Gibsonm's final report comes in, you guys decide on the targets for the 4 ICM strikes and 4 CAS strikes. The TRPs set by Gibsonm will be added to our mission, so callin in fire on those will be quick. They are also good for command and control.

Lauenau has a Star Trek movie prop museum. A worthy goal for liberation before those Commie bastards will put their greedy paws on it, I say!

Why not let them get there first but only have red uniforms left.

We all know the guy in the red uniform isn't going to last the whole episode. :)

Back Brief / SoM Mission 4:

The intent speaks to conducting a sector reconnaissance, identifying likely en locs and attempting to avoid decisive engagement.

I assess that the enemy has probably abandoned the open ground and concentrated in the towns and villages. The red dashed areas indicate possible positions.

Note most of these are sited to spt the suspected minefields.

I suspect the routes south of the river (C and D) will be blocked by mines to enhance the pre existing defiles.

I intend to accept some risk and deploy four recon "Battle Teams".

Team 1: 2/2/C in the North will conduct reconnaissance along Route A.

If they occupy SIEDLUNG ROLFSHAGEN undetected they will secure a SBF position (SBF1) to support the atk into KATHRINHAGEN.

They will also attempt to occupy KATHRINHAGEN and if succesful occupy SBF2 to spt the atk on AUETAL.

Team 2: 1/2/C and myself will conduct reconnaissance along Route B and control the overal activity.

Team 3: The FO wagon will conduct reconnaissance along Route C with a view to confirming crossing point trafficability and see if that route is mined.

Team 4: 4/2/C and the XO will conduct reconnaissance along Route D (comprising both the E30 and the L443 routes.

Reconnaissance Reserve: 4/C Tk Pl. Will spt Routes A and B with a view to occupying the SBFs. The lack of tks fwd should also make it harder for the en to determine my Main Effort.

Engrs: Will remain in depth but have a BPT task regarding Engr Recon of damaged bridges, etc.

RFI: I'm to avoid "heavy contact". Is that a MR PL / Tk PL type position (or larger)?

It means if you go in too strong, the enemy may alert his reserves and push them forwards BEFORE Apache starts his attack. The best situation would be that the reserves A) are late or B) arrive alerted by Apache's attack, and can be engaged on the move, before they can dig in...

Some additional info about the terrain in real life: There are far more roads in that forest than seem to be in this map (to support the movement of local timber; all the forests in this area are "managed forests").

Those that are in this map should be single lane hard top or at least gravel road (I haven't checked the map myself yet) and offer, in principle, excellent and fast mobility.

They may offer an opportunity to bypass the enemy in a swift maneuver. Of course, that's a risky option, but it seems that at least in real life maneuvers US forces often overlooked these options as their maps often didn't show these roads, or they were discarded without actually taking a look at them. Many operational successes of the Bundeswehr against our fellow Americans were based on exploiting these options.

Update:

Back briefed the Comd and got some non committal guidance about "get it done fast but don't incur too much risk". :)

Now the S2 tells me about some dope smoking teenage local who wants to show us some hidden track in the forest. I might send the Engrs up to look at that but as this guy doesn't look like he's had a bath or a proper meal for a month I'm not basing the whole plan on his information. :)

Personally I'll be happy if we find a gap through the obstacle belt.

Guys are doing their last minute checks.

Need to try and get them some rest. The Top found one of the CFV teams (2 vehicles, their crews and their dismounts) completely asleep when he did his rounds. No sentry posted, just guys crashed in their seats.

Thankfully the MOPP state has stayed pretty low, I'd hate to be doing this "suited up" and respirator on.

SITREP format follows - just as a reference:

Line 1: The as-of date-time group (DTG).

Line 2: Brief summary of threat activity, casualties inflicted, and prisoners captured.

Line 3: Friendly locations (encoded using control measures or TIRS points). The following can be listed:

CP locations.

First subelement’s center of mass.

Second subelement’s center of mass.

Third subelement’s center of mass.

Any additional elements as necessary.

Line 4: Combat vehicles operational. The following types of vehicles can be listed:

Tanks.

CFVs.

APCs.

ITVs.

Line 5: Defensive obstacles (encoded using codes, control measures, or TIR points). The following can be listed:

Type and location of obstacles. Abbreviations can include MF (minefield), TD (tank ditch), AB (abatis), RC (road crater), and CW (concertina wire).

Type and location of executed demoliton targets.

Type and location of reserved demolition targets.

Line 6: Personnel strength, classified using these status levels:

GREEN: full strength; 90% or more fit for duty.

AMBER: reduced strength; 80 to 89% fit for duty.

RED: reduced strength; 60 to 79% fit for duty; the unit is mission-capable.

BLACK: reduced strength; 59% or less fit for duty.

Line 7: Classes III and V supplies available for combat vehicles. Status levels for ammunition and fuel are the same (GREEN, AMBER, RED, OR BLACK) as for personnel strength, with percentages referring to the amount of basic load level available. Refer to Line 6 of this report.

NOTE: If an item is reported as status level BLACK on lines 6 or 7, the appropriate logistics report must follow.

Line 8: Summary of tactical intentions.
