Hedgehog
Either the BIOS or your Hard Drive.though its more probable your autoexec.bat or whatever it is called now has been corrupted.
TankHunter
Ok, it isnt the hard drive (which I feared it was) and it isnt the BIOS I dont think. I am able to boot from the windows disk. So that is leading me to believe that windows is rooted...Thanks Hedge for the help.
congo
Before you do anything expensive try replacing the CMOS battery on your MOBO if you have not done that recently.
Administrators Sean Posted September 1, 2008 Administrators Share Posted September 1, 2008 There are several files the windows needs to see before it will boot. Its not finding them. Check these things in order:1. Check for a floppy in the floppy drive. It might be trying to boot off of it.2. Go into the bios and make sure that your hard drive is in the correct spot in the system boot order. It should be something like (CD Drive->Floppy->Primary Hard Drive)3. Grab your XP install disk, go to another computer and download/install/create the "Windows Ultimate Boot Disk". Burn that disk to a CD.4. Bring that CD back to the broken computer, and plug in a cheap USB drive or hard drive to back your stuff up to.5. Boot from that CD you just made. It will take forever to load - its loading a mini version of windows XP off the CD. 6. If your hard drive is functioning at all, it will show up in the interface.7. At that point, you might want to back up anything important to the usb device. 8. Run one of the virus scanners included on the files you backed up.9. There are several utilities on the CD that will look at your windows install. Im unfamiliar with them all except one that will let you restore your registry to older xp restore points in the past.
TankHunter
Again, thanks guys. I have solved the issue with the computer failing to boot and apparently all other issues (user error and other). It seems there was some files that were in a state of error in the previous build so I ended up rebuilding it. Again thanks for the assistance. Thank God it wasnt an issue with the HDD or mother board! Edited September 1, 2008 by TankHunter Sorted
Members Ssnake
Take it as a hint of fate to reconsider your backup strategies.
TankHunter
I am thinking that would likely be a good idea. Granted I had most of my stuff on another hard drive at the time but still I would have lost a few things that I wouldnt have wanted to lose.
