Yes.

 

My understanding is that whilst NATO vehicles tend to fire smoke nearby for protection, Soviet based vehicles projected the smoke further in order to blind the shooter (as opposed to hide the target).

 

Hence NATO smoke will land within say 100m of the firer, but Soviet smoke would land several hundred metres forward.

Yes.

Soviet doctrine called for smoke on the offense, the final 300m to the objective (possibly to blind RPGs of the time that had approximately that range). We can see a shift with softkill active protection systems like Shtora which are shorter range and intended to obscure the own tank rather than to blind a possible attacker.
