NATO TBN delimitation zone

RHK111

It should depend on not only terrain but on the other METT-T factors as well. (Mission, Enemy, Terrain, Troops, Time).

A better answer than that (at as far as the in the context of heavy mechanized/armored forces against a Warsaw pact style opponent) can be gleaned from this manual: FM 71-123

...these figures however do not reflect the current operational realities. In Afghanistan typically a tank platoon detached to support infantry operates alone (well, together with the infantry of course), so that a tank company - if your army happens to actually have an entire company of heavies in theater - will be dispersed over the entire area of operations (e.g. the totality of the Helmand province, in case of Canada).

Both the cited FM and my example probably mark the extreme ends of doctrinally accepted employment of armored troops.
