If the enemy has no airforce and no decent artillery of his own you can get away with a lot of ... improvisation.

I mean, seriously: If ISIS' idea of an armored vehicle is to grab a truck and to weld some steel plates on it like a Mad Max reenactment, the TOS-1 is probably one of the best armored vehicles in the area. ISIS is still there because they're holding the population hostage and are placing IEDs everywhere. They have tons of explosives and small arms and light trucks - but most of the heavier vehicles that they captured are probably destroyed by air strikes by now.

Its something that I often don't understand.

AFAIK the TOS-1 has some 8km range? So when they are at best 8km away from the enemy....is it wise to park your vehicle in a dense row out in the open?

Max. range is 6 km for TOS-1A(3,5 km basic TOS-1) and TOS is primarily a direct/semi-direct fire chemical warfare system(but also capable for indirect fire); consider it as reincarnation of flamethrower tank capable to stay out of small arms and light AT weapons range.

Farewell to the Centurion: last Israeli reserve Centurion unit being re-equipped with Merkava, after one last operational deployment in Ghaza, late 2002.

Some other reserve Centurion-equipped armored brigade was re-equipped with Merkava back in 1996. A movie was produced celebrating the transition and 25 years of the brigade's existence.

In the following part of the movie, the old Centurions and the new Merkavas can be seen between 1:55-9:50:
