At the time the HOT missile system was actually superior to TOW (slightly bigger range, considerably bigger punch), and the Jaguar 1 was capable of fighting under NBC protection. However, only with the Jaguar 1A1 (seen in the opening, and closing shots of the video) you got a thermal camera for night combat capability. Note that it was a 2nd generation thermal system, quadrupling the sensor resolution over what was mounted in the Leo 2, or M1 at the time. But it came too late, so to speak, being introduced more or less simultaneously to the fall of the Iron Curtain.

Since then TOW has seen many upgrades of course, including the TOW-2B, which probably make it the superior missile system today. Note however that the crew compartment had to be completely opened in order to fire the missile - which increases the vulnerability to artillery fire and, of course, NBC threats.

The Jaguar 1A1 fleet was then sold off to the Austrian Army where they soldiered on for another 15 years or so before being finally "retired" (=sent into the smelter).

Arguably, the concept lives on. There's the Russian Khrisantema and Tigr-M systems as dedicated anti-tank missile platforms; one might make the case that the Wiesel with TOW launcher could be seen as an extension of the concept (I would however argue that it isn't a tank destroyer (in the doctrinal sense), but merely a mobile anti-tank asset for light infantry units).

I for one would enjoy the playable Jag, or the Wiesel TOW. I may have mentioned this before :) :)

I for one wouldn't mind us adding them. But given that there's no .mil customer for this, we'll have to do it on our own, when there's time, and no other, more pressing issues at hand. Which makes it bloody unlikely, right now.

There was a similar case in Israel in 1994. An embittered tank mechanic stole a Magach 7 out of the ordnance depot and drove it on the highway for 20 kms, until it threw a track and hit a lamppost. During the travel a bus was hit by the main gun barrel and 8 passengers were lightly injured.

After the tank had stopped, the soldier moved to the turret, fired some rifle shots at the police and eventually surrendered after two hours of negotiation.
