Homer
http://webmup.com/uVrH2/A friend sent this to me with no additional information. Here's what I saw before I fixated on the hole in the hull side: It's a demolition, not combat related. It's Iraqi. Then I saw the hole and now I'm obsessed and need to find out more information. There's definitely a hole if you watch that spot during the explosion. It looks like its from an outward explosion because I don't see any scorch marks on the outer side panels. Is it battle damage? So many questions...
Assassin 7
Looks like there was explosives pack inside of it. It also looks like it was battle damaged. But not sure

So many questions...I would say that's a deliberate (demolition) internal explosion. There is no Warhead detonating on the outside cooking off internal munitions. And the explosive is venting out of all the holes at once. there's no external then internal explosion.
Assassin 7
I wonder if it had service ammunition in the ammo compartments
Hedgehog
I wonder if it had service ammunition in the ammo compartmentsIf it did, it doesn't now, maybe they appropriated HEAT rounds for the demolition? There's a big black cloud in the vicinity of the ammo compartments. But I guess that's from the demo pack leaking through.
MAJ_Fubar
It looks like its from an outward explosion because I don't see any scorch marks on the outer side panels. Is it battle damage? So many questions...I see what you mean there; could it be the result of an IED strike? Although the track is intact, and the number four road wheel is still there, the road wheel is blackened...interesting.

dejawolf
only two ways an abrams can blow up like that. one is demolition, the other is when ready rack or semi-ready rack is open, and tank gets hit.
Marko
Could it be the M1 taken out by its crew on the thunder run charge one tank was battle Damaged and destroyed by its crew.

Gibsonm
Well there's been quite a few since then as the Iraqi army (armed with M1 by the US) fell back/collapsed in the face of ISIL.For example:pB-X4BNAtu4

Gibsonm
Well there are quite a few others abandoned so this is not unique. Edited February 17, 2015 by Gibsonm
Invader ZIM
If the link above with the captured M1 is any indication, it seems they don't know how to use them, and take the ammo in them to use as IED's, etc.
Members Ssnake
...it seems they don't know how to use them, ...That may be overly optimistic. Considering the savages illiterate and inept is probably wishful thinking. But tanks are bomb magnets - easy to locate and take out if you cannot control the sky above. They drag a substantial logistical tail, and require specialized mechanics etc., so their use is probably rather impractical to those who captured them. Using the ammo for IEDs may actually be the smart thing to do in their situation.
Invader ZIM
That was sort of tongue in cheek when I wrote that, but your right Ssnake.

Gibsonm
Of course, so everything until now had been "quite satisfactory".
Invader ZIM
I'm German. I have no known sense of humor. lol, I'll try to remember that next time. It's certainly one helluva mess over there, I think they should have just sold the Iraqi's T-72's or something more familiar to them instead. They couldn't have done any worse with them vs the M1's at least. Here's a video of the latest fighting, there's a bunch of ISIS suicide vehicles, some are definately stolen Humvee's that get engaged with Milan ATGM's from Peshmerga forces. The shooting starts at 1:52. http://youtu.be/kKby5fvBtH4 And apparently, we're shipping 150 or more M1's to Iraq this year. http://www.businessinsider.com/iraqs-military-is-getting-hundreds-of-american-vehicles-2015-1 http://www.popularmechanics.com/military/a23/isis-islamic-state-iraq-american-tanks-humvees/ Battlefields are fluid places, and gear sometimes changes sides. U.S. warplanes have reportedly bombed M1A1s captured by IS, for example. Let's hope there's not any repeats with this new batch of vehicles.
