Well you can argue that you needed 5 for story/drama reasons. As for the flamethrower - that always bothered me. Beginning of the movie you see a handheld one being used to purge the village... during the scene of the "360 breakout" prior the shooting starts you can see the commander open the hatch - although not shown in the movie but I thought this was the point when he stuck out the barrel of the handheld flamethrower and started letting loose. You don't see any flamethrower on the tank throughout the whole move, so that would explain.
