  1. I have a ThinkPad T520 with the NVidia NVS 4200M chip set. To get it to run SP Pro PE 2.6 well, I had to go into the CMOS and switch the video mode from NVidia Optimus to Discrete. I'd suspect that other laptops with new NVidia chips are going to be similar. Note this discussion: http://forum.notebookreview.com/lenovo-ibm/573258-w520-discrete-graphic-chip-enabled-when-external-monitor-used.html
  2. No, the AAR I uploaded shows two random hits of BM-42 that were not specified as impotent. Both caused damage. All other hits the red tanks are specified at impotent and did no damage.
  3. Wanted to try some gunnery with the M901. Set the enemy to impotent. Within under a minute, my section of ITVs consisted of burning wreaks. (Realistic, yes, but not what I wanted in this case.) I created another scenario, ran it in both test and offline mode, and in both cases at least some of the shots by impotent enemies were causing damage. I have attached the scenario and an AAR in which two of the ITVs were damaged within a minute. It seems that only two shots by the tanks out of maybe a hundred were potent when they should not have been. My Scenarios.rar
  4. ZoneAlarm has done this since at least the Windows 2000 era. If you shut down the services, ZA still blocks a lot of network traffic. This is likely a security measure. ZA assumes the user would not shut down its services, so it figures that some malware shut down its services. Therefore, it blocks key traffic as a safety measure. It seems that the only way to convince ZA that you (the user) want it to be dormant, is to uninstall it.
  5. Note - I'm very happy with the new M901. The launch sound, the speed of the missile leaving the vehicle, and especially the gunner's position. As a platoon leader, I got to look through the sites on the range, but I never got a chance to play gunner, even using MILES. This is GREAT!
  6. The server is probably taking a beating at the moment. If you have had trouble with the download on the first try, you might not have a solid-enough connection to eSim to get the download until the rush subsides a bit. Also, if you have trouble, try downloading one part of the archive at a time. The server let me download five files at once, buy I'm in the USA using FIOS. That is about as solid a connection to eSim's server as is possible for home use.
  7. Years ago there was a hex-based board game series set at a similar tactical level as most SB Pro PE scenarios. It completely ignored CAS. The designer explained it this way: "At this scale, the best way to represent a CAS strike would be to hand a whisk broom to the controlling player and let him take one swipe across the board. Any enemy piece that was moved would be considered destroyed. Now how fun would that be?" Take the recent video as another case: "After 20 minutes against the Abrams, I had no tanks." Reword that a bit: "After 5 minutes against the Frogfoots, I had no tanks." Note that the Western armored forces have not fought without almost total air superiority since the end of WWII. The US Army refused to invade France in WWII until air superiority could be reasonably assured. There are good reasons for that approach. Being the unit that gets hit by the CAS attack that gets through is a tactical situation that is so one-sided that most gamers would refuse to take part in such a scenarion a second time. At the division level, the AA battle may be an interesting scenario. At the company level, you just hope you don't draw the short straw (the attention of a flight of enemy CAS jets), else it is simply your turn to die. Anything less than that would not be a realistic portrayal of CAS. Would you really want to play such scenarios that it would be worth eSim's efforts to put the necessary time into the project?
  8. Read up on the development of the B-29 sometime. At least that took place during a major war, and there was a known need for an extremely-long-range heavy bomber.
  9. She might sit for awhile yet. Her steel is only worth something like 7,000,000 USD in today's market. I say "only," because I glanced at the Requirements Document. I think it will be a stretch for a scrapyard to follow all of the MoD requirements and still make a profit in the end. Meanwhile, CV-67 has been sitting here in Philadelphia for around three years now while the US Navy looks for someone to take her on as a museum project. Like that's going to happen anytime soon. Just a month or so ago they shut down the museum ship USS Olympia, the last survivor of the Great While Fleet, because they couldn't raise enough money to keep her afloat. She will almost certainly become a new artificial reef off of the New Jersey coastline in the near future. Oh, well. I guess we can only afford to keep so much of the past alive for the enlightenment of future generations.
  10. I'm reading Max Hastings' book Bomber Command. It is interesting to see how much wishful thinking, double-speak and outright lies were used by those we consider good guys, or even heros. "Bomber" Harris and a number of others, including key leaders in the US 8th AF, seem to have been actually delusional at times. It would be interesting to see a study comparing that kind of military-madness with the likes of crackpots like Sparky.

  12. The scenario designer has places to load two types of 40mm ammo, just like it has places to load two types of .50 ammo. However, the second place for 40mm ammo does not seem to accept anything. It seems to insist on remaining at 0/0.
  13. I see. The extra ammo counter wasn't there before - probably because I didn't use the palm switch and Load Pos first. Now that works fully. Thanks. The only problem left, then, is how to load a secondary ammo type to the Lemur AGL. Can anyone else create a scenario and successfully load both HE and HEDP? If so, what steps do you take?
  14. Greetings. Long time no chat. Longer time, no MP. :-)
  15. Ah, I missed the palm switch part about the Load Pos switch. :c: However, The ammo down x100 & x1 buttons still do not work for me. On the other hand, the ammo count up buttons work better than it seemed at first. One can click the Ammo Up x100 button three times and hit store, and the count jumps right to 300. You don't have to go back-and-forth between buttons.
  16. Based on Ssnake's comment about 40mm, I tried a further experiment. In doing so, I discovered that I cannot load the secondary ammunition for the AGL in the scenario editor. Even if I remove all HEDP ammunition, I cannot load any ready or stored HE rounds. I tried it with the M113 DK and the PIIIC. Both acted the same. I also found that I not cannot replicate the Reset Ammo/ Store sequence to quickly bring the count up to 300. I did it at least twice before. I thought I understood what I did those times, but now I can't say for sure...
  17. I didn't mention this at first because I found an easy work-around. But, to help others: The tutorial states that the Reset button will clear the fire limitations. I found that it did not respond to clicks. However, I was able to clear the fire limits by clicking Set Limits and then immediately clicking Store. In addition, the upper limit of 0000 Mils stated in the scenario is too low. I had to raise the barrel of the M2HB to about 0007 Mils to engage the technical sitting at long range. (Hence the need to clear the fire limitations...)
  18. I experimented more, and found that: F2, Barrel Pos, and F3, Load Pos, do nothing, no matter what other buttons you push or what state the Lemur is in. HOWEVER, you can reload the Lemur weapon in any position, so the F2 and F3 fucntions don't really matter, anyway. The left and right arrows do change ammo type IF you click the Store button right after clicking the appropriate arrow button The Reset Amm Count button takes effect immediately, no need to click the Store button The Ammo Up x100 and the Ammo Up x1 buttons both work, BUT you must click the Ammo Up button and then click the store button for each increment. To adjust the ammo count up by 202 takes 8 mouse clicks. :-( The Ammo Down x100 and Ammo Down x1 buttons do nothing, even if you follow up clicking on them with clicking on the Store button If you click on Reset Amm Count and then immediately click on Store, the ammo count jumps to 300. Therefore, if one always reloads in 300-round increments, one could ignore the Ammo Up and Ammo Down buttons entirely.
  19. By the text of the tutorial, the Load Pos button and the ammo count buttons should function. On my install, they do not. I can reload the M2HB and cock it, but then I have to use the ammo readout in the upper right to keep track of ammo usage. I created a test scenario using the M113 DK with the Lemur. In that case, the same thing happened. I reloaded the M2HB before running out of ammo, so that I could test the ammo reset button, and that did work. However, the Load Pos and all of the rest of the ammo count buttons failed to do anything. I could not change the ammo type in the Lemur from M85 to M84 or back, though the balistics of the two rounds seem to be very similar. Even at long ranges, M84 rounds hit where the reticle was aimed, even though the Lemur thought M85 was loaded. I did do a complete uninstall, including deleting the eSim directories, before installing 2.5. I'm using Windows 7, x64.
  20. CH flight yokes have a bit of stickiness in them when you pull or push for elavator control. You get a bit of a jarring motion when gunning in SB, not the fine control that true gunner's handles give you. The only comparison I can make for sure is between the CH flight yoke, generic joysticks, the Cadillacs on a real M1A1, and generic mice. A mouse gives similar precision to the Cadillacs, but feels really weird. A joystick feels about right, but doesn't have nearly the precision. The CH flight yoke feels better than the mouse, but still not quite right; it seems more precise than a joystick, but not as precise as a good mouse. I have switched to using a mouse exclusively for turret gunnery in SB. I sometimes use a joystick in SB when following dismounted troops or using the TC position, but only if it is convenient to bring a joystick along.
  21. Nice to see the M113A1, by the way. That was my ride when I was an ITV platoon leader.
  22. On my computer, I ran the "host" session with default network settings. In the "client" session I used a different call sign, and I left both the host IP address and the Port number fields blank. I did not have to make any special adjustments to the Windows firewall. I'm using Windows 7, x64, by the way. Not that it should matter in this case.
  23. Maybe it is better to separate whether or not it is ever OK to beat POWs, and whether or not it is always appropriate to cashier or even imprison soldiers who beat POWs. I do not believe one's answer to the second question necessarily prejudices his the answer to the first question. My opinions: POWs should never be beaten for acts committed before capture, though they may be punished for certain acts committed after capture. If a soldier "beats" a POW, he should be punished, but a commander should take into account the circumstances surrounding the soldier's actions before determining said punishment. Punishment could be anything from a verbal rebuke to imprisonment, depending on those circumstances.
  24. I found that simulations such as SB Pro PE and Flight Sim X run at much higher frame rates in Windows 7, at least with an x64 install, than they did with Windows XP. I'm using a ThinkPad T61 laptop using Windows 7, and I can run SB at 1440x900 and default distance setting without a hiccup. I do have an NVidia Quadro NVS 140M card with 128 MB dedicated RAM. I don't play big, complex battles because I don't play SB very often. I can't vouch for performance with lots of units and lots of smoke.
  25. Sorry to hear about this. The problem is, if the law says, "It is illegal to carry prescription medicine in unmarked containers," then one has broken the law simply by taking one's meds out of the original bottles and putting them into another container. A hard-nosed judge might send a person to jail just for that. The law might be stupid and the punishment might be extreme, but it is still the law. One can't argue that he wasn't acting illegally, because he was. Rather, the person can only argue that he was doing something that the average law-abiding American citizen would be shocked to hear is now illegal. This is why part of America's legal foundation includes the concept of jury nulification. Some judges and lawyers today take a dim view of it, but it is certainly part of the "American Way." It is true that a jury cannot "judge the law" and declare it unconstitutional, but a jury can declare a person not guilty based on their perception that said law should be applied in the case at hand. A judge might get mad and declare a mistrial, but that is the most he can do. He can't overrule the jury and convict the person anyway, and he can't send the jury members to jail for declaring the person innocent. This is also why we have the right to be tried by jury. I for one cannot imagine why a person facing a felony charge would be willing to let a judge decide his fate. I would not consider waiving such a right. Even if one is confident that any reasonable person would see it his way, he doesn't know when he's going to face an unreasonable cop or judge. And beyond that, if the average person tends to waive his rights, then the government will see it as a green-light to claim that if one does exercise his rights, then it is defacto evidence that he is guilty. I have heard such talk in news reports during the last few years. Therefore, demanding one's right to remain silent, to have a lawyer, to be tried by jury, etc., is not just for him. It will also help protect innocent people facing a potentially wrong verdict after him. Finally, I remember a statement an experienced JAG officer made to us at IOBC. "If I was guilty, I'd want to be tried in a civilian court. If I was innocent, I'd want to be tried in a military court martial." Think about the implications of that statement.
