  1. I use the AN/PAS-29A, it's a clip on thermal you can put on your night vision goggles to get the same fusion effect as the PSQ-20's.  They've been around for about 8 years.  It can spot a man at 300 meters easily under some very dark conditions, vehicles under much longer ranges.  My unit runs about 5 hours on 1 CR123 battery.

The UK has a similar version as well.

  2. I'm guessing RedWardancer is talking about upgrading the dismounts to use the NLAW Storm anti tank weapon, hoping they would fire it under Zero Dark Thirty conditions. :)   Since the Javelin comes with a thermal imager for night fighting, he wants a small anti tank weapon to use at night.  I'm guessing the individual sight for the weapon has to be night vision capable for them to use it in the sim this way.

  3. Gibsonm, do you guys ever get to use the small hand held thermal imagers when unbuttoned like the AN/PAS-23 and other's?

They are essentially 1x unity magnification, but with a 30 degree or more FOV and can scan a large area quickly, at least to where you might notice things out of place or have the larger optics of the vehicle more quickly hone in to make better identification.

This is the unit I own, video of it outside of a car driving, the unit has been around for 10 years or so now.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1aYjBAHToU  Conditions were humid, and wet after a rain, in Hawaii.

  4. This is footage from Feb 25,28 1991 of 3AD Apaches 2/227th Aviation during Desert Storm, interesting footage through the sensors of the Apache's as they fly out to their targets at low altitude.  You can actually see the Iraqi armor firing on U.S. forces from the perspective of the Apache's.
