  13. THE TOYOTA WAR: CHAD-LIBYA 1987

    THE TOYOTA WAR: CHAD-LIBYA 1987
    by Connaugh

The Toyota War is the name commonly given to the last phase of the Chadian-Libyan conflict, which took place in 1987 in Northern Chad and on the Libyan–Chadian border. It takes its name from the Toyota Pickup trucks used, primarily the Toyota Hilux and the Toyota Land Cruiser, to provide mobility for the Chadian troops as they fought against the Libyans. The war began with the Libyan occupation of northern Chad in 1983, when Libya's leader Muammar Gaddafi, refusing to recognize the legitimacy of the Chadian President Hissene Habre, militarily supported the attempt by the opposition Transitional Government of National Unity (GUNT) to overthrow Habré. The plan was foiled by the intervention of France which limited Libyan expansion to north of the 16th parallel, in the most arid and sparsely inhabited part of Chad.

    SITUATION:

Libyan forces have fortified various villages into strong-holds in Northern Chad.

    MISSION:

Chadian Forces are to assault and capture the Libyan strong-holds of Faya-Largeau, Fada, Ougui, Quadi Doum, Zour, Ountanga Kebir, and Aouzou using the mobility of their "Toyota" trucks. If possible, a raid into Libya to capture the Air Base of Maatan-As-Sarra is to be attempted.

    FORCE COMPOSITION:

    3 x 50 Cal MG Truck Platoons
    3 x TOW Truck Platoons
    3 x RCL Truck  Platoons
    3 x Truck Infantry Platoons
    3 x Supply Trucks

  14. CHAOS IN THE CHOUF-MOUNTAIN WAR IN LEBANON 1983

CHAOS IN THE CHOUF-MOUNTAIN WAR IN LEBANON 1983
    by Connaugh

The Mountain War or Guerre de la Montagne in French, was a subconflict within the 1982-89 phase of the Lebanese Civil War, which occurred at the mountainous Chouf District located south-east of the Lebanese Capital Beirut. It pitted the Christian Lebanese Forces militia (LF) and the official Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) against a coalition of anti-government Muslim leftist militias led by the Druze Progressive Socialist Party (PSP), backed by the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and Syria. Hostilities began when the LF and the LAF entered the predominantly Druze Chouf district to bring back the region under government control, only to be met with fierce resistance from local Druze militias and their allies.
In the wake of the June 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon, the main Maronite Christian ally of Israel, the Lebanese Forces (LF) militia of the Kataeb Party commanded by Bashir Gemayel sought to expand its area of influence in Lebanon. The LF tried to take advantage of Israel Defense Forces (IDF) advances to begin deploying troops in areas where they had not been present before. This territorial expansion policy was focused on regions known to harbor a large Christian rural population, such as the mountainous Chouf District, located south-east of Beirut. By early 1983, the Lebanese Forces' managed to establish garrisons at a number of key towns in the Chouf, namely Aley, Deir el-Qamar, Souk El Gharb, Kfar Matta, Bhamdoun, Kabr Chmoun and others. However, this brought them into confrontation with the local Druze community, who viewed the LF as intruders on their territory.

    SITUATION:
As soon as the last Israeli units left the Chouf, the Druze launched a full-scale offensive on Lebanese Forces positions at villages throughout the Chouf.

    MISSION:

Lebanese Forces, comprised of the Christian militias of: Phalangists, Marada, Tigers, and the Guardians of the Cedars of Lebanon, are to advance into the Chouf and recapture the lost villages.

    EXECUTION:

  16. The Schleswig-Holstein Question -- Resolved

    The Schleswig-Holstein Question -- Resolved
     by Connaugh

The Schleswig-Holstein Question  was a complex set of diplomatic and other issues arising in the 19th century from the relations of two duchies, Schleswig and Holstein to the Danish crown and to the German Confederation. The British statesman Lord Palmerston is reported to have said: “Only three people have ever really understood the Schleswig-Holstein business—the Prince Consort, who is dead—a German professor, who has gone mad—and I, who have forgotten all about it". The central question was whether the duchy of Schleswig was or was not an integral part of the dominions of the Danish crown, with which it had been associated in the Danish monarchy for centuries or whether Schleswig should, together with Holstein, become an independent part of the German Confederation. The Second Schleswig War in 1864 resolved the Schleswig–Holstein Question violently, by forcing the king of Denmark to renounce all his rights in the duchies in favour of Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria and King William I of Prussia

Currently, the "Irredentia" Party gained control of the Danish Parliament and secret preparations for reacquiring Schleswig began.

    Mission:
Danish Armored Forces will cross the border and take back Schleswig. The main objectives will be the Towns of Husum and Schleswig. Initial resistance is expected to be light and the Armored columns are to rapidly seize the objectives and prepare for German counterattacks.

  19. The Elgin Marbles - Reclaimed

THE ELGIN MARBLES - RECLAIMED  by Connaugh

    SITUATION:

The Elgin Marbles are a collection of Classical Greek marble sculptures made under the supervision of the architect and sculptor Phidias and his assistants. They were originally part of the temple of the Parthenon and other buildings on the Acropolis of Athens.

In 1801, Thomas Bruce, 7th Earl of Elgin obtained a firman, which was an official decree,] from the Sublime Porte, the central government of the Ottoman Empire which were then the rulers of Greece, which allowed for the shipping of the marbles from Greece. From 1801 to 1812, the Earl's agents removed about half of the surviving sculptures of the Parthenon, as well as sculptures from the Propylaea and Erechtheum. The Marbles were transported by sea to Britain. In Britain, the acquisition of the collection was supported by some while some others, such as Lord Byron, likened the Earl's actions to vandalism or looting.

Following a public debate in Parliament and the subsequent exoneration of Elgin, he sold the Marbles to the British government in 1816. They were then passed to the British Museum, where they are now on display in the purpose-built Duveen Gallery.

After gaining its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1832, Greece began a series of projects to restore its monuments. It has expressed its disapproval of Elgin's removal of the Marbles from the Acropolis and the Parthenon, which is regarded as one of the world's greatest cultural monuments. Greece continues to urge the return of the marbles to Greece for their unification by diplomatic and political means.

    MISSION:

Failing to have Britain return the Elgin Marbles, Greece has planned an amphibious assault and Greek Armored Forces will land in London and take back the Elgin Marbles.

    EXECUTION:

Greek Armored Forces will move amphibious PT-76 tanks and M113 APC's up the Thames River and land at the Blackfriars Bridge. Heavy Transport will bring in a  platoon of 1A5 Leopard tanks. This force will advance quickly to The British Museum and secure the objective while trucks disembarked from another transport will be loaded with the marbles. The force will then make its way back to Blackfriars Bridge and embark for Greece.

Britain will counter with the Scots Guards, who are stationed at The Wellington Barracks, London. The Scots Guards are comprised of Scimitars, Scorpions, and Warriors and infantry with anti-tank weapons.  The Scots Guards will attempt to block the return of the force with the Marbles on its way back to Blackfriars Bridge.

No artillery support will be available. The area of operations is in the City of London and there is to be no collateral damage. Rules of Engagement preclude the harming of any citizens.

    Mission Completion:

Platoon 6A (Trucks) must spend 15 minutes at the British Museum (loading the marbles) and then move to Blackfriars Bridge for extraction.
