Please don't read too much into anyone's

I'm not reading into anyone's posts.  I just read them.

And it is criminal to possess classified information in the US.  The only exception is in the process of legitimate news gathering.  Its up to DAs and judges to sort out intent for charging.

  2. And Ellsberg leaked to the press.  In the US justice system there is a massive distinction between random exposure of classified information and an effort to inform the public through recognized reporting institutions.  I am a little taken aback at the level of immaturity around the suggestion on this board.  I would expect it from World of Tanks/Warships or the ilk.  But always thought the SB community was a little beyond that in its make up.  Expectations are now reset.

The real old heads will do the opposite, and assume the title with flashier graphics can't possibly be a better sim, because all of the current leading consumer sims are a generation or two behind in 3D rendering, and it's been that way as long as I remember.

Just a few years ago, there was ample justification for that line of thinking.  A dev's resources are a finite pool and can be very restrictive in the planning of the game/sim.  Devs typically chose good graphics vs barely passible simulation or barely passible graphics vs plausible simulation.  And the curve on that is constantly shifting based on tool kits/APIs greeting released.

There is a third factor and that's motivation.  Investor- or market-driven devs are generally pushed for cutting edge graphics with simulation deprioritized to be good enough on launch day.  Client-driven devs tend to build more sim-oriented, depending on clients or niche market.

  4. I actually use that.  I thought there was a hot key you could use in testing that did basically the sane thing.  So you could monitor Red units coming in and out of LOS and contact.  I guess I mixed it up with something else.

Please don't attribute someone else's comments to me, it just comes off as not paying attention to who is saying what.

I do not disagree with the sentiment, but I never said it.

I didn't mean to attribute it to you...messed up the quote.

edit...pointing out that I'm not the only one without an arguement...

So here's the argument.  I have found esims pretty accommodating in adding things people request that don't contribute one dime to its government business.  How many vehicles get added that not a single pro user has used in the last 20-30 years?  That statement was uncalled for and almost the definition of a troll.

  6. I doubt very much the reboot after reinstall was what fixed it.  I rebooted multiple times before uninstalling and reinstalling.  I reinstalled then rebooting again.  I find the map transfer app fairly finicky.  Every now and then I have to kill it in task manager or windows services.  It disconnects and won't reconnect or it just won't come up when clicked on.  This is across 3-4 different laptops over the years.

This time it just wouldn't reconnect no matter what I tried.  Only thing I can think of is a recent windows update.

  7. Suddenly, my map XFR app couldn't connect.  Tried uninstalling and reinstalling all of SB...not a fun process on my day off.  Restarted PC.  The XFR app ran once connected, but as soon as I tried to download a map, it went to disconnected and I got an error message.  Tried shutting down XFR through taskbar icon left click.  The icon went away.  Tried restarting XFR app.  Got the hourglass then nothing.

Ran the command (admin) line above.  Deleted the Mutex file.  Same thing.  I am stumped at what caused the problem and why its not working.

I sure hope the remedy isn't another uninstall/reinstall.  I am wasting away a day off and am going to give up for a while if it is.

Edit - Hold on...it suddenly started working.  Not sure why.  All I did was reboot.  I'll see if it stays working.

  8. I know there are people that do a lot of mods, but the CM system isn't really needed in SB.  There are thousands of combinations of race, clothing, etc. that let you make a very diverse civilian and insurgent population.  That includes operating cars, trucks, technical, IEDs, etc.

For example, i spent two minutes and told the editor to populate a blank map with random civilians.  I can adjust that or go in and specifically set the look of each civilian.

And what is really different from CM is civilians actually show up in the game.  Also, they can be insurgents.  Along with that, the designer can penalize a player for killing civilians.  There are people in here that know more than I do about it so take it for what its worth.

Most books are out of print and 20 years old now.

Did you even check the Osprey website?  Every New Vanguard book is in stock still.  I went through a bunch of them and couldn't find a single paperback out of stock.  Plus they are all digitized now.

As to age, it doesn't matter for most and they have released revised editions of equipment that has been significantly updated over the last 20 years.

  10. I would be very hesitant banking on a GPU that emulates DX9.  The first issue is possible performance hits.  The second is Intel's commitment to maintain an emulator for an unsupported set of APIs for DX9.  Just look at AMD's support for older OpenGL libraries.  Not to mention Apple.  Both have had significant impacts on the Combat Mission game.

The 1070 is no slouch.  Especially a ti version.  I would not discard a 1070 just for Steel Beasts.  I would consider investing in a new CPU over a GPU.  If you are playing some more graphically intensive games like MSFS or DCS the yeah, the 1070 is getting a little creaky.

although i notice you can swap out vehicles

Well that's because that's not part of the map.  Seems like you are struggling with some pretty basic concepts.  I'd suggest going through the sections on map vs scenario editing.
