  1. Interesting - thx ! But OT as well: 49.95 USD - that price suprised me a bit, for a game of an already older (??) type, as it is already the 10th in the Squad Battles series.
  2. Well I found a free version of: "The Other Side of the Mountain: Mujahideen Tactics in the Soviet-Afghan War" - also written by L. Grau (+ A.A. Jalali) "Grau's second volume, The Other Side of the Mountain, provides the mirror image of the account: mujahideen tactics in the war, based on 1996 interviews with surviving participants." THX to Tankhunter for mentioning the book - I didn't know about it's existence. * It's available at the National Defense University Library: http://www.ndu.edu/Library/index.cfm?secID=206&pageID=126&type=section -> click on "If you are not affiliated with National Defense University, but would like to search our library catalog, please click here." -> MERLN Group Catalog Basic Search: do a search on keyword "mountain" and author "Grau" NB, this does NOT look like illegal downloads at all to me, but to support the author I probably will by some of his books sooner or later. * Some excerpts: http://www.geocities.com/pentagon/6453/afghanistan.html * A review and comparison of both books in Parameters, the US Army War College Quarterly: http://www.carlisle.army.mil/USAWC/PARAMETERS/00spring/sp-essay.htm
  3. To celebrate the arrival of 2.460, here's some more tactical thought for food, after 66 Battle Stories. You probably have heard about it, or read parts of it, but here is the full version of: The Bear Went Over the Mountain: Soviet Combat Tactics in Afghanistan http://www.ndu.edu/inss/books/Books%20-%201996/Bear%20Went%20Over%20Mountain%20-%20Aug%2096/BrOrMn.pdf This free book describes (small-)unit actions by the Soviets in the 80's Afghanistan; some of them may be suited for SB-scenario's ... And very, very interesting: It's not just the story of what happened, but also each of the 49 vignettes is followed by a tactical comment from both the Soviets (Frunze Military Academy), AND by a US observer ("the editor"), that is the author, Leslie Grau. And even more, maps are included describing each action ! Maps are too often not used in this kind of books, and yet they are essential. In fact, this is an amazing book. It's a pleasure to see how sometimes ppl take care to create something well. To capture the lessons their tactical leaders learned in Afghanistan and to explain the change in tactics that followed, the Frunze Military Academy compiled this book for their command and general staff combat arms officers. The lessons are valuable not just for Russian officers, but for the tactical training of platoon, company and battalion leaders of any nation likely to engage in conflicts involving civil war, guerrilla forces and rough terrain. This is a book dealing with the starkest features of the unforgiving landscape of tactical combat: casualties and death, adaptation, and survival.
  4. * For player-controlled helo's, you can do this: You can hit "Z" to lower them to a close hover, then hit Shift+Backspace to turn off the engine. This lands them without crashing them (quote < Ssnake). * For AI-controlled helo's: IIRC, when in the mission-editor you put helo's with 0 % fuel, then in game they are standing on the runway (and not hanging 2 meters above it), and with their rotors not moving. That way you can create the impression of an airport etc ... nice view. BUT, I think there is no possibility at all to refuel them, so no way to start them up again & reuse in the scenario :-( -> In practice, would it take a lot of programming-time to correct this ? Or could this feature be included in the hotfix for 2.460 that Dejawolf mentioned elsewhere ? :-) Rgds - K
  5. Not to be lost out of sight: Dejawolfs ameliorated version of T-72M1: http://www.steelbeasts.com/sbforums/showpost.php?p=168106&postcount=12
  6. Big difference ! THX !! K
  7. IIRC Korean Nightmare (1 & 2) are SB1-scenario's, not converted for SB Pro PE. I think the author was Spoons from Sim HQ. Rgds - K Korean Nightmare.rar
  8. I looked a bit more in the small arms sounds. Here are the results and some questions. In attachment you will find the test-scenario, so that you can listen yourself to the various sounds. ---------------------------------------------------------- 1) Rifles: 1.1) Tested: Rifle - 5.45 - RU, Rifle - 5.56 - NATO, Rifle - 7.62 - RU, Rifle - 7.62 - NATO: When fired by RED, all 4 rifles sound identical. 1.2) Rifles fired by BLUE sound identical as well (tested: Rifle - 5.56 - NATO, Rifle - 7.62 - NATO). 1.3) But rifles fired by RED do not sound like rifles fired by BLUE, even if you selected the same type of rifle and ammo in the mission editor. E.g. Rifle - 5.45 - RU fired by RED has a different sound when fired by BLUE. RED's rifleshots have a more "cracking" sound, whereas BLUE's riflerounds more "zap". This is good !, as it helps create more tactical challenge/immersion in the game. => Question: are these different RED and BLUE sounds copies of actual guns ? 2) MG's: I only tested MG - 7.62 - RU fired by RED and MG - 7.62 - NATO fired by BLUE. 2.1) MG's don't differ too much from the rifle-sound: So MG fired by Red sounds like rifle fired by Red and MG fired by Blue sounds like rifle fired by Blue. They seem to be identical, but of course the rounds are following each other up in a quicker succession. 2.2) MG - 7.62 - RU fired by RED does not sound like MG - 7.62 - NATO fired by BLUE. Same difference as for rifles: "cracking" sound vs "zap" => Same question here: are the MG-sounds copies of actual guns ? 3) HMG: I only tested HMG - 12.7 MM - RU fired by RED and HMG - 0.50 CAL - NATO fired by BLUE. Different sounds. => Same question: sounds of actual guns ? Rgds, Koen Sounds Small Arms - Red vs Blue.rar
  9. Splendid, Tacbat ! Very nice find ! What spacing & formation do you recommend ? And what about "being careful" with flight path direction changing ? Many thx, Koen So, if there is this easter egg, then maybe the "land"-command for helo's is also hidden somewhere ? Or the way how to resupply helo's (was not possible pre 2.460 IIRC) ?? Hmm ...
  10. Sajnos, nem igazán: Belga vagyok; a feleségem Magyar - azért egy kicsit Magyarul beszélek. Kicsi a világ ... Szervus - K
  11. WOW ! Nagyon szép ! Köszönöm Rgds - K
  12. I'd like to participate, but only for the two 1st missions ... Could you accept me in this case, or rather not ? Danke, K
  13. 66 STORIES OF BATTLE COMMAND - or the various FM about tactics put into practice at the NTC ! I haven't read through it all yet, and it's mostly aiming at Batt. level or higer (so a bit less interesting for SB), but it's a fascinating book: http://www.au.af.mil/au/awc/awcgate/army/66stories.pdf Fascinating, because it describes actual exercices at NTC, and the lessons that can be drawn from them. So no fictional Team Yankee-stories (although I really enjoyed those books), but the real thing, or at least the closest we can get to a description of a Cold War tank battle, if that ever would have happened. Rgds - K
  14. Possible to have some more information about infantry smallarms and smallround (flyby) sounds: * The sounds of which guns are used in fact: M16, M249, M240, AK, PKM, others ...? * Would it be possible to upload here examples of the sounds of these various guns, as they are represented in SB 2.460 now ? I'm not familiar with any of them, so cannot identify them myself in the game. * And can you tell who is shooting by the sound ? In other words, does Blue get the US weapon sounds, and Red gets the Russian weapon sounds ? If this would not be done already, it might be great for the SB tactical experience - cfr. Tacbat's Infantry Small Arms Mod (cannot be used anymore ?. Thx, Koen
  15. Really beautiful or even impressive pics from all ! - K
  16. 2.460: what an amazing experience, thanks to the fantastic sounds ! (cannonsalvo's "echoing" in nearby valley's - I gave the scenario NAI COIN a quick spin) & fantastic sights as well: new skins ! I'm going to discover this baby very slowly, it deserves it. Thank you all who were involved with this: creators, testers, bughunters etc ... Koen

  18. Belgium has finally joined the happy countries with 2.460 ! K
  19. Namaste, OK, I will discuss now with you on 1stcctf-forum No, I won't, but you will, I'm afraid :-) THX, K
  20. Time zone: that would be CET preferably => I guess that may make things difficult to work together ? Day: Slight preference for the weekend. I'm new to MP, indeed, but am curious to give it a try. My playstyle might fit yours (but I'm a really lousy gunner) Rgds & thx, Koen
