A bit of a rework of the T-62. Color matched to the T-55's and the details added in 3.002 to include a drivers hatch and better details of the fuel tanks, wheels and sprockets.

I was wondering how long you would wait for the t-64 onslaught... I hope you packed us full of SABOT! :)

You have resupply.  I studied how far ahead the advanced guard would be and Soviet tactics when resistance is encountered along with the timeline they would take to prep before the main force heads in.... it would be about 1.5 to 2 hours behind the Advance guard.... and that's not with A-10s and F-111s bombing them.

the sound production was amazing - the little details like keeping the rumble of battle going on keeps the immersion going through the mission, really feels like I'm stuck in West Germany here in Cold War gone got!

what map did this terrain use? I'm guessing Fulda?

I decided to hold back the ITV'S, using the Bradley's and M1's to the middle and the artillery to counter battery theirs. Thank god we don't have counter-battery radar implemented for real or I'd have problems!

I used an accurate map for an accurate scenario - Hanover. : D  Fulda is south-east and would clearly have looked wrong with the mountains.  The enemy 2S1s are set to "blind" otherwise they would have engaged your airborne assets with 12.7mm.

Operation Scorpion Part 2 - Contact with advance guard

    1989

    Single player mission

    Hanover Germany near Langenhagen.
    Day 3 of the War.

    SITUATION:
U.S. forces have shifted north after the diversion attack at Fulda.  The true axis of the Soviet armored attack is heading for the German industrial heartland.    If the Soviet armored onslaught cannot be stopped here only the nuclear option remains.

The advanced guard for the 2nd echelon 7th Soviet Guards Division is roughly 20 minutes away from contact with our forward scouts.  Position your forces now.

OH-58D Kiowa Warrior support on loan from 10th Mountain Division-  Set the scout route but no further east than defense-line BUZZER or you risk being spotted.

    COMMS:

"Condor" - Company commander - (voiced by Cobra)

"Hammer" - 1st platoon leader  1st Lt. Daniels - (voiced byTim Sielbeck)

"Torch" - 2nd tank platoon leader Sgt. Wilkinson (voiced by Alex Hahn)

"Recoil" - 3rd platoon bradley leader 1st Lt Dearborn (voiced by FalconKPD)

"Colt" - 4th platoon bradley leader Master Sergeant Hawkins (voiced by Krause)

"Fox" - Forward observer group (voiced by Alex Hahn)

"Spur"- Ranger Recon (voiced by Dunadan)

"Ramrod" - M109A3 Battery commander (voiced by Cobra)

"Soda Straw" - 10th Mtn Division OH-58D Kiowa Warrior (voiced by Cobra)

"Six" - Colonel Chaffee at the TOC (voiced by Cobra)

    Extra notes:

All sound files must be dropped in your esim folder under "media" for all the custom soundwork to work properly.

This scenario was put together with the help of the voices above and with the best intelligence available regarding forces in the AO of the era.  While normally the BOAR would be handling the area to the northwest of Hanover, in this scenario a feint to the south has drawn British forces away due to soon forseen issues of war leaving US armor forces rushing to meet the enemy.

After consulting SSnake, the following airport, Langtenhagen, is NOT municipal in real life nor is it to the north-east of Hanover (it is to the north-west).  Thank you Nils.

Also, UAV visuals were used seeing how the best I can do in terms of using the mast-mounted systems of the OH-58D at tree-top level.  This is due to current limitations in SB Pro.

Ammunition in both tanks and in the hands of infantry is as accurate as possible to this era.

The challenge of this mission is to defend a wide area.  The advancing forces are the advance guard of a Soviet tank regiment.  The main body of this regiment will be seen in missions 3 and 4 in this series.   Do not allow Soviet forces to approach beyond defense-line gauntlet or you lose the mission.

Helicopter support through OH-58D is available along with M109 support to the north.

Should you have issues or spot bugs please contact Cobrabase so that I can remedy the issue and build a more realistic experience. No doubt some issue will arise.

Missions 3 and 4 are in the works as I write this.

A special thanks goes to my "voice platoon" for donating their time for all of the platoon leaders.  Enjoy!

Currently mission-end logic is disabled due to strange results.  I plan to solve these issues with a future refined release.   The mission will NOT currently end if red forces break the inner defense line.

  5. Within an hour Operation Scorpion missions 1 and 2 will be up but not at steelbeasts.com because of the 100MB size barrier.  These are the first two missions of a series of 4 that have voice-over work from the sim community.  The files are compressed in RAR format but because SB Pro 4.006 only allows WAV format audio I could not make the files any smaller.

More information together with a briefing soon.

That municipal airport's name would be "Langenhagen" (and it's to the northwest). :)

There is however also a military airbase west of Hannover, "Wunstorf", for an air transport squadron.

East of Hanover there's a civilian airport near Brunswick ("Braunschweig" in modern German).

Yeah, I had to improvise there and make it municipal but... this is why it's a work in progress!  Thanks Nils!

Why not the Warthog for SB? IMO the extra buttons are an big advantage.

Wear and tear on my prized Warthog and lack of force-feedback leaves the hog for flying.   All the buttons I have on the Logitech are more than enough.

Ok, time for next post, this time again about armor, but a bit more modern one from the 80's. So T-72B, T-80U and T-80UD. I am certain @cobrabase  and @matsimus will appreciate. ;)

First about turret armor, again Soviets started development of 3 tanks, however when the idea of T-72B development was just improvement of a cheaper mobilization tank by UVZ/UKBTM. The LKZ/OZTM/KBTM and KMDB decided to combine their effort in development of a common tank type, decision was made however to manufacture two versions, one with gas turbine engine and second with a diesel these tanks become the T-80U and T-80UD, however again while LKZ led side decided for some simplifications, KMDB decided to fully use potential in the T-80 design.

Let's start with turret armor designs.

    image013.jpg

    From left to right: T-72B, T-80U, T-80UD.

So the T-72B uses a simple Non Energetic Reactive Armor insert in the turret cheeks. A more detailed description on the images below.

    1446590439-t-72b-armor-3.jpg
    t-72b-armor-article_jmo_may2002_4.jpg
    1446590452-t-72b-armor-5.jpg

It was relatively cheap, relatively effective armor protection for the turret. I think more commentary on this subject is not needed thanks to fragments of the great article by James Warford above.

But let's move to the T-80U and T-80UD.

The T-80U uses a turret filler, which is made from separate cast cells, which are filled with some sort of polymer like material, some sources claim that it's even in a semi liquid state. So it's quiet fancy armor.

Here is how my friend tried to figure out how exactly armor structure looks like.

    T-80U%2520model%2520.jpg

The T-80UD however uses different type of armor, it's so called CERMET or ceramic/metal armor.

We do not know much more about T-80UD armor, besides claims from KMDB it was more effective, and the fact it's development was continued till this day, it's next iteration was used in a new welded turret for improved T-80UD so called Object 478BE for Pakistan, and later with T-84 series, including it's latest variant the T-84BM "Oplot" (Russian/Ukrainian for Fortress or Hold).

    image014.jpg
Cutaway of a welded turret variant.

    image016.jpg
Comparision of the T-90A welded turret on the left, and T-80UD/T-84 welded turret variant with modular front armor on the right.

    kern.jpg

Here is interesting schematic of the T-80UD/T-84 welded turret variant with modular front armor, and how it is installed to the turret.

    478be.jpg
On this drawing we can see also how tight is ERA protection on this type of turret. Also cast turret of the T-80U and T-80UD had very tight, good ERA cover. We can compare it with the ERA gaps on the T-72B cast turret.

    image013.gif
T-80U ERA cover, identical is on T-80UD.

    t80ud-02l.jpg
T-80UD with welded turret, again very tight ERA cover.

    T-72BM_main_battle_tank_Russia_Russian_a
    0_4.jpg

And this is T-72B model 1989 (actually upgraded to T-72BA variant). As we can see ERA protection turret is not tight, there are gaps, that can eventually lead to a situation where enemy projectile won't have any contact with ERA.

    72bm.jpg
Here is an example of T-72B model 1989 which was twice hit in a turret with SPG and RPG I believe if my memory serves well, non of the granades hit the ERA although some modules were rippen off the turret by their explosion. The crew and tank survived only because enemy projectiles were not able to pierce through the base armor.

Now the hull, let's start with T-72B.

    Jejfo%252520%2525282%252529.jpg

Yep, nothing special, just a spaced steel armor. I don't know if there is something more to comment here. ;)

    wum975.jpg

Here at the top, Russian sources claims that T-80BV (new builds as T-80BV not T-80B retroffited to T-80BV standard) and T-80U have the same front hull armor design, it's three steel layers with two STEF layers in between.

The T-80UD however is different as far as me and my friends were able to gather informations from Ukrainians.

    T-80UD%2520hull.png
This is a simplified schematic of the how glacis armor looks like. On the first glance it looks similiar, however, STEF was replaced by ceramics (probably the same as in the turret. And an small airgap was added inside the armor. The thickness of layers is also different.

When it comes to front hull ERA the T-80U and T-80UD also are better protected, the T-72B have a large belt of unprotected hull on the upper part of the glacis plate. The T-80U/UD cover is better.

Also something for @Ssnake the T-80U/UD glacis plate empty ERA modules. I hope this can help you guys in further development. ;)

I know this pseudo "documentary" (more like a soap opera) and propaganda series is silly and not very informative, yet here at 15:45 we can see the process of how reactive elements are inserted in to ERA module on the hull glacis.

Ok I hope it will be interesting for everyone and helpfull. To the next time. ;)

This was some of the best analysis I have ever seen.  I read the T-72 article but this was the first time I've seen T-80U speculation.

They are in TIS, the issue is that they are out of focus now until they get to the target area. They aren't as bright as they could (or probably should) be though, and this is known.

TIS focus is either ALT+mouse wheel, or just press NUMPAD DEL key (this is the "easy focus" key).

The numpad* and numpad/ is an SB Pro thing that may have slipped into the notes.
