General

A further refinement of the 3BM15, the 3BM22 round enhances penetration by effectively tripling the armor-piercing cap size, at the cost of lower muzzle velocity due to increased projectile weight. Although technically capable against early Leopard 2 (hull) and M1 (hull and turret) series tanks, as with the the 3BM15, this rounds shape and full caliber fins limit effective range to a comparatively short 1500m and below. Entering service in 1976, this round was the most common APFSDS projectile in use by the Soviet Army throughout the mid 1970s and early '80s, and, though no longer produced, was massively stockpiled and is still cleared for use. It saw extensive action on both sides of the so-called "War in Donbass" after stockpiles of 3BM32 and 3BM42 rounds began to run low. Due to this combat usage, as of this writing (2020) it can be assumed that Russian stocks of 3BM22 rounds have been significantly reduced while Ukrainian stockpiles may be heavily - if not completely - depleted.
