General

The Leopard 2A6 is a 2001 modification to the existing German Leopard 2A5 fleet under the KWS I program. The principle changes involve the replacement the 44 caliber (5.28m) Rh120 Rheinmetall cannon with the longer 55 caliber (6.60m) version which offers greater muzzle velocity and range and the inclusion of fitted an auxiliary power unit for silent watch operations.

The Leopard 2A6 serves a the basis for later Leopard 2 derivatives such as the Canadian Leopard 2A6M, Spanish Leopardo 2E, and Greek Leopard 2HEL, although the latter two feature new built turrets rather than upgraded Leopard 2A4/A5 turrets.
