General
The M829A1 is an American made armor-piercing, fin stabilized, discarding sabot with tracer (APFSDS-T) round which is intended for use against enemy tanks. Nicknamed the "silver bullet" by US tank crews in Operation Desert Storm, it was responsible for wide spread destruction of Iraqi T72 tanks. It should be noted that while this round was technically fielded in 1988, it did not see general issue until the 1991 Gulf War and even afterwards stocks were retained CONUS (in the CONtinental United States) and typically only released as a "special issue" adjunct to the M829.
