General

Beginning development in 1957 to address shortcomings with the ZSU-57-2 and entering service in 1965, the ZSU-23-4 "Shilka" has proven a capable short-range anti-aircraft platform. Armed with four liquid-cooled 23mm 2A7 autocannons guided by a RPK-2 "Tobol" radar system, the "Zeus" - as it is sometimes called - had a strong effect on Western aircraft development and employment. Outside of the Shilka's anti-aircraft role, the vehicle is very capable in direct-fire engagements against lightly armored targets, particularly in urban combat.

Although assigned to regimental anti-aircraft battalions as a single four vehicle platoon, Shilkas will normally be encountered as part of air-defense "companies", consisting of a single ZSU-23-4, one SA-9 or SA-13 SAM, and a small number of IFV/APC mounted 9K38 "Igla" shoulder fired MANPADS.

As modeled, the ZUS-23-4's detection radius is 8km, with a maximum engagement range of 2500m, and is more effective against low flying crossing targets than those that are closing or retreating. By default, the Shilka will be in air target search mode, with its radar dish rotating with 20°/sec (3.3 turns per minute). Once an air target is acquired, the dish will track the target (while the guns may lead it).

If the Shilka is attacking a ground target, the radar dish will face straight ahead, with the armored cans protecting the sights elevated.
