eSim Games and SteelBeasts.com to award prizes in second Steel Beasts Pro scenario design contest

Aptos, CA, July 31st, 2008

Software developer eSim Games, LLC and the official fan site of its premier product, Steelbeasts.com, will be awarding several prizes for the best platoon sized, single player missions to run no longer than 45 minutes. Submissions will be accepted up until September 21, 2008. Submissions will then be evaluated by judges for the next eight weeks. The winners will be announced on December 1, 2008. For questions on scenario design, we invite you to visit the scenario design discussion board at www.SteelBeasts.com

As before, the following categories will be rated for each scenario:

  1. Scoring
  2. Briefing
  3. Play Balance
  4. Fun Factor
  5. Replayability
  6. Originality

Once the scenarios have been evaluated, each judge's scores will be averaged to create a overall score for each scenario, and a score for each category. Prizes will then be awarded for the top 3 overall scenarios, and to each category winner. Prizes are going to be similar to the last contest; for details, please visit this thread.

All submissions become property of eSim Games and may be included in future releases of Steel Beasts.

Submissions must meet these minimum requirements in order to be evaluated:

  1. The submission must be new – you cannot submit an existing scenario.
  2. The submission must be your original work. Participants cannot modify other people’s work and submit it as their own.
  3. A working score.
  4. A briefing that covers the basics (in English). (Machine translation is ok)
  5. Routes and waypoints for the red side.
  6. One submission will be accepted per person, team submissions are allowed.
  7. Judges and eSim Games staff cannot participate in the contest.
  8. The scenario's play duration must not exceed 45 minute.
  9. The player-controlled force must not exceed one platoon.

Please submit your scenarios to scecontest@steelbeasts.com

1) Can the platoon be part of a larger AI unit as tank platoons rarely, if ever, operate independently?

2) Are all the sce submissions for Contest 1 available for download or will they be part of a future release of SB Pro?

Yes, as long as the rest of the force apart from the platoon is owned by the computer, nothing larger than a platoon to be player controlled.

Must the Red side be scripted, or may it be (if otherwise able) player-capable?

The focus in all the scenario design contests is on single-player missions. It is very easy to modify them later for cooperative multiplayer sessions, or even team on team sessions by removing paths and ownership limitations. If it works for single player mode, it can easily be made to work for all kinds of multiplayer games. The same cannot be said for scenarios following the opposite design path.

All scenarios from contest 1 will be included in the next update, along with all the scenarios from contest 2. Contest 1 scenarios are currently unavailable until then. The plan is to have a new "Contest" scenario folder created with the update, and within that there will be "Contest 1" "Contest 2" and so on folders which contain all the scenarios submitted and a label of which one won 1st, 2nd and 3rd place (or something similar to this will happen).

2 questions pls:

1)

  1. The player-controlled force must not exceed one platoon.

Suppose we have a large SACEUR-mission, where the player controls only one platoon,

but if that platoon is destroyed, he gets access to another platoon:

does this fall in the scope of this contest ?

2) What about giving ppl, who participate in the contest (& prove this by sending in a "draft" or plan of their scenario), access to version 2.403 ?

-> It would be neat to show the newfeatures of the next upgrade immediately upon its release.

-> I find it harder & harder to have original idea's for platoon based missions. The new features might help.

Rgds,

K

... The winners will be announced on December 1, 2008.

OK, it'll have to wait until next week, I'm sorry. The jury cast their votes in time, but I got entangled with I/ITSEC preparations (and now actually being there). Once that I'm back in the office and the used undies are in the washer, I'll take care of this.

:)
