Hi guys,

someone needs a new map project?

If yes, I have one for you.

I was looking through the map folder and found the Dien Bien Phu map.

Unfortunatly it`s a big forest. But I searched a little bit in the internet and found something.

In the dropbox link you can download 9x 1:50000 maps of vietnam and laos.

All you need to make the Dien Bien Phu map.

The time frame of these maps is 1965-1968.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/2acukpkrrd7qop1/Dien%20Bien%20Phu%201to50000.rar?dl=0

So if someone create the map, we can make some Vietnam War missions.

Here the website were I found these maps and there are a lot more:

cheers

Wish there was a way to add that topo image (semi-transparent) to the map editor. Then you could kinda have a way to add the streams and roads in accurately and to scale.

I have made some maps in the past by just looking at the map imagery online and using the Mark one eyeball to place it where I think it should go. It makes for creating towns and villages a hard and tedious task.

I will give this one a try and it will give me a break from staring at Grenada which has been my latest project.

You keep bumping this. Are you going to do all the digitizing required?.

 why?

@Gibsonm: It`s like always if we have a project, we find a replacement for not modelled vehicles.

Servus,

why, the Dien Bien Phu  map is in your map folder and there is a .hgt too.

So all you need is a lot of time, patience and knowledgement how to do.

The real maps you can download from dropbox.

Thank you Duke for real map " Dien Bien Phu".  It will definitely be useful.

In my opinion the creation of such a scenario is impossible in SB.  There is no paratroopers, howitzers, M24 Chaffee and of course Napalm.  It will  be not accurately ( historically, equipment)

SB is a simulator -- a training tool. I don't agree with the implication that a map is not a worthwhile project if SB does not model the vehicles involved in an actual event that took place on that terrain.

Can nothing be gained from employing other assets in an accurate Vietnam-era environment? Assets appear to be available to create that environment.

DarkAngel's reluctance, on the other hand, seems to be based on the amount of work required. I can't speak to that, since I have no idea what "digitizing" means in relation to SB map work. Either it's more intensive for this particular project than for others .. or there are other factors at play here.

I just don't see the point in trying to shoot down a map request based on vehicle selection.

Uh... those are the hills. And a lot of random forest. Notice the straight line leading from the south to the north-east. Looks a lot like two different satellite images with different lighting conditions that then have been run through a filter to turn certain color shades into forest. Both parts are based on "real data" (though maybe low res), but the result hardly is a comprehensive representation of the actual terrain, let alone the terrain of 1956.

I totally disagree, we have new buildings, wire, claymores etc. do built up forward bases. We have chinooks, Uheys, Cobras for the aircav. We have M113s, we can downgrade M60 to M48s, we have PT-76, T-55.

We can damgage the M109 engines and so we have Howitzers and we can use airstrikes. There are a lot of posibilities.

The main problem is to create the enviroment for this map, like DarkAngel wrote thats need time, a lot of time.

you could still articulate a scenario sized area- 10 x 10 km, for example. while that's still a lot of work, it's significantly less work than presuming to do a whole map, which probably wouldn't get entirely used in every conceivable scenario anyway.
