current state of Indian AFV devlopment

Recommended Posts

With cost overruns of Arjun project and Indian Army's preference for Russian MBT's , mainly due to familiarity and ease of using that equipment, India has stop all productions of Arjun MK1

Arjun MK2 will go into production will will result in 118 AFVs produced by end of 2018. This only happened due to political pressure.

Most of Indian Ar units will stay T-72 and will gradually be upgraded to T-90s.

As far as i know , India has abandoned any future plans to design or produce any more MBTs by the state own DRDO.

If any new design or production does happen , it will likely be undertaken by Privet corporations.

Two major privet players are stepping in to provide Military solutions to India , Mahindra & TATA group(s)

TATA group has built a concept prototype of a wheeled IFV http://www.military-today.com/apc/kestrel.htm

While Mahindra Group is in talks with Airbus and other European companies to produce Versions of Euro copters for Indian Military.

Both organisations are facing some issues with technology transfer with foreign companies objecting to Indian FDI rules that prevent foreign companies from having controlling stake in Indian Defense Joint Venture Holdings.

Some other Indian projects that were cancelled due to Politics and RED tape:

1. SPP Arty based on Arjun Chassis and Denel 155 mm L52 G5 howitzer- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhim_self-propelled_howitzer

2. Abhav IFV- Based on CV9040 - Has been in development stage for last 10 years. Its most likely will be canceled in the next year or soo.- http://www.military-today.com/apc/abhay.htm

Most likely additions and devlopment for Indian Ar and Mech units for next 5 years :

1.40-50 % MBTs will T-90s  , rest will be T72M1 With possible upgrades ??

2. Mech units will stay BMP-2 with Msl , FCS , Optics & Ballistics computer upgrade.

3. Introduction of Wheeled IFV based on or similar to http://www.military-today.com/apc/kestrel.htm , this will possibly be done as a conversion of Inf Bn to Motorized Bn.

4. BRDM-2 will continue to be Recce vech of Ar Recce units.

5. Addition of UAV and Micro UAV elements to Ar and Mech Units.

6. SP Arty - Finally after a decade India might be getting the South Korean K9 http://armyrecognition.com/september_2015_global_defense_security_news_uk/larsen_and_toubro_selected_to_supply_100_self-propelled_howitzers_to_the_indian_army_23009152.html

Sorry if this is useless info, I was bored.

This is actually interesting, so they finally get to a point where they realized that Arjun program is complete and utter disaster? Surprising, considering how much hype they made about it in the past.

In my opinion.: Arjun and especially Arjun MK-2 is still a great system.

But its significantly different from standard T-72.

In terms of weight, Size, Ammo.

it creates its own level of logistics requirements and issues that they are not use to.

and lets not forget the vested interest of politicians who could have made a buck under the table if the supplier was a foreign corporation and not state owned one.

Well, me and Dejawolf have rather negative opinion about Arjun.

It's armor protection is not that great as DRDO tried to present it, in fact it's surprisingly overweight compared to it's protection levels. Dejawolf once made even 3d models based on factory photographs and other source material... it was terrible, especially the turret.

Also it's main armament is obsolete rifled gun firing APFSDS ammo with performance comparable to German DM13 APFSDS from 1979... in XXI century!

Not to mention the whole development program, all delays, changes in concept, how long this program is performed, it's one huge disaster.

IMHO you will end better with license production of T-90S and T-90SM.

With respect to opinions expressed by you and Dejawolf. I am going leave it at that.

And Indian Army is moving towards T-90s.

http://www.dassault-aviation.com/en/dassault-aviation/press/press-kits/india-to-announce-its-intention-to-acquire-36-rafale-aircraft-rapidly/

Dassault has issues where they are trying to get a separate contract for the aircraft that will be assembled in India. Basically Dassault does not want to be responsible for aircraft's assembled in India.

Kurt Tank was best German Friend India had. He set the stage for Aircraft Research and development in India.

protection scheme of arjun:
Area behind the GPS is the most worrying. one hit, and TC+gunner die. one hit at a slight angle, and you hit ammo storage, which means turret goes flying.
