Hi,

Yes, the CV90 in Steel Beasts Pro PE can actually be upgunned to a CV90120 if you activate Dutch language support. When selecting the main gun it will then refer to a 120mm cannon.

Regards,

Sander

Very nice, however does it give you a 120mm. Calling my C6 a 120mm on my G-wagon does not make it a Leopard 2 A6M.:remybussi:jk;ing

Hi,

Another article on the CV9035, again in Dutch

http://www.landmacht.nl/binaries/De%20cv90%20komt%20eraan_tcm31-77819.pdf

For the linguistically challenged:

"Our heart beats with expectation ... (reference to Dutch Sinterklaas song - SvD)

The CV90 is coming

While army troops are demanding one last effort from the good old YPR, they are hard at work in Sweden on the anxiously expected replacement for the armoured vehicle. Patience is being rewarded: the first CV9035NL is making its way. "But first all items must be ticked off."

It seems to be a multifunctional megamachine with an excellent gun. Rumours abound about the CV90, the new custom built infantry fighting vehicle (IGV) of the army. But only a handfull of infantrymen know for sure what their future ride looks like or drives like.

Although it has been known for ages that the first example will be delivered in 2007, the Scandinavian vehicle has hardly ever been spotted in the Netherlands. Yes, the CV90 may have been on display during the Army days at Wezep, but that was an earlier version which moreover only remained stationary during the open door days. The version that is custom built to the requirements of the KL (Koninklijke Landmacht = Royal Army - SvD) is still being tested in Oernskoldsvik in Sweden by the manufacturer Haegglunds, the personnel drawn from several trial teams from the MOD and personnel from the OTC Manoeuvre (OTCMan).

"We can imagine that all armoured infantrymen are looking forward to the moment that they can get to grips with the CV90", says Hans de Goeij of the Defensie Materieel Organisatie (DMO). He is in charge of the program Replacement YPR765/M577, which the Project IGV CV9035NL is part of. Öur hearts are also beating in expectation. It is really getting exciting now."

Requirements

That excitement is growing because DMO, OTCMan and Haegglunds are still busy with the qualification trials, while the delivery deadline - starting december 2007 - is looming. De Goeij explains: "During the study phase we have formulated a number of requirements for the new armoured vehicle. Based on those demands we ended up with the CV90. Haegglunds has redesigned that vehicle specifically for us. Now it is our job to test against those specifications."

At the request of the Dutch a 35 millimeter cannon has been installed on the CV90, in addition the rear compartment roof has been raised to have additonal space for the infantrymen and the vehicle has been digitised with among other things the Battlefield Management System.

"We are now testing amongst other things the reliability and durability, the ergonomics, climate control, optics, electronics, firepower and last but not least protection. The follow on track is known, but first we must tickj off all items. A false start would be the very last thing to wish for."

Lieutenant Colonel Rob Olijve, project officer of OTC Manoeuvre and department head of the IGV conversion program, agrees with De Goeij. And he is in a position to know: the OTCMan has been involved in just about all of the current qualification trials and has therefore been traveling between the Bernhard barracks in Amersfoort and Oernskoldsvik in Sweden.

Olijve: "Haegglunds has built the vehicle according to our PVE (Programma Van Eisen, red. demand statement - SvD) and delivered configuration - and performance docuementation. That can eb compared to the technical manual in the glove compartment of your car, only with much mroe detail. They contain everything what you have bought. These documents are being checked during the qualification process. This is done both for the theoretical aspects as well as in actual practice. Does the configuration document actually match the PVE? And does the performance documentation match the actual performance? Those tests take time."

Up to date

And for that reason the infantry has to make do with the YPR for a little while longer. After nearly thirty years of service this vehicle is due for a well earned retirement. With the choice for the VB9035NL the KL takes a leap into the 21st century, maintains the project team. According to them the project has had a pioneering role in development if a next generation of armoured vehicles.

De Goeij: "It is not for no reason that the CV90 is already termed the queen of the battlefield. The vehicle has ofcourse a different purpose than the Leopard tanks, but makes a similar impression. It is highly mobile, with versatile firepower. This really is the armoured vehicle of the future."

"We are for example the first ones in the world to opt for a 35mm cannon in this vehicle. We have a reason for that: 30mm would still be allright, it is the current calibre of today and yesterday. But we soon expect to reach the limits (of that calibre) and have therefore decided to make the next step now. 35 Millimeter will be the future."

LtC Olijve is looking forward enthusiastically: "With the CV90 we leap ahead many generations. It will be vastly different comapred to the YPR. It will take some getting used to the new technologies, but with the CV90 we have an IFV that will remain one of the most modern vehicles in its class for many years to come."

Operation

That is no undue luxury. The introduction of the new armoured vehicle is one of the largest KL materiel operations, that has taken years of (design) work and cost a lot of money (over a billion Euro). The procurment of this special vehicle fleet is not just a matter of ordering and delivery. Olijve: "It is a really large project."

It appears that the delivery of the first five vehicles to the OTCMan in december is an occasion for a celebration. "Then the real work will start here. The operational conversion team can then finalise the preparations for its course. At the start of 2008 the vehicles will go with the core of instructors for a first firing session in Bergen, Germany. And in June the 44 Armoured Infantry Battalion JWF of 43 MechBrig in Havelte will be the first to start the conversion training."

But before the first armoured infantrymen can get to grips with the armoured wonder vehicle, their patience is to be tested a bit more. Like a real royal the queen of the battle field is not arriving just yet. "But" assures Olijve the impatient ones "it will be more than worth waiting for."

Last call

However wonderfull the new armoured vehicle is going to be, the designation CV90 falls short. And that is to be remedied. The KL has issued a call to all defence employees to enter a new name for the new infantry fighting vehcile - full name: Combat Vehicle 9035 NL Mark III. This is your last chance to send in a fitting name. Beware: the name "Viking" has already been taken. Fashion an ideal name with Scandinavian deities, Swedish heroes, fitting animal names, calibres and cannon. Send it, preferably with a short motivation or explanation, to r.olijve AT mindef.nl. The Commander Ground forces will pick the winner from entries. "

Regards,

Sander
