Rolling Thunder 16 - Mission 2

OPERATIONS ORDER - 11 ACR

Firstly my thanks to Harvey Black for writing some excellent novels (The Red, Black and Blue effect) which inspired much of this.

Situation:

Date: 14 FEB 91
Time: 0630 GMT/Zulu (0730 Local)
Location: Eichenzell, South of FULDA

General:

Rolling Thunder 16 back story

Enemy:

Overnight elements of the 39th Guards Motor Rifle Division, 8th Guards Army penetrated the Inner German Border and captured Bad Hersfeld at great cost.

It is expected that having achieved this breakthrough, the Forward Detachment (tactical version of a Operational Manoeuvre Group) of 39th Guards Motor Rifle Division, based around 15th Guards Tank Regiment will attempt to exploit Southwest down the Kinzig Valley towards the River Main.

It is assessed that the 15th Guards Tank Regiment consists of:

3 x Tank Battalions, equipped with T-90
1 x Motor Rifle Battalion, equipped with BMP-3

The Soviets are supported by prodigious amounts of tube and rocket artillery and appear to have access to large amounts of Frontal Aviation (fixed and rotary wing, attack and transport).

The Soviets have also used Chemical and Biological agents during their assault and we have no reason to doubt they will continue to deploy them.

There has been no reported Nuclear release to date.

The Regt S2 has determined five possible Avenues of Approach (AA) through your AO:

AA1 - Western corridor running from Schlitz to Bimbach

AA2 - Centre corridor running from Pfordt to Niesig

AA3 - Eastern corridor running from Haunetal to Marback along the A7

AA4 - Top Right corridor running from Lahrbach to Armenhof

AA5 - Lower Right corridor running from Eckweisbach to Dipperz

AA3 is assessed as the Most Likely avenue of approach.

South of Fulda the two likely routes are SW along the A66 and SE along the A7

Friendly:

Covering Force: There are only scattered ad hoc groupings between you and the lead elements of 8th Guards Army.

Verteidigungskreiskommando (VKK) troops are sending reports back from isolated pockets in the newly occupied areas of the FRG. OP ALPHA is manned, though under repeated indirect fire and is reporting heavy Soviet / Warsaw Pact troop movements South of its location within the GDR.

Corps has sited two Atomic Demolition Munitions (ADM) within your AO at Bad Salzschlirf (GS3608) and Dietges (GS 6698). These ADM will be blown as Soviet recon forces approach in order to (IOT) create a major defile.

US 3rd Armoured and 8th Mechanised Infantry Divisions are rushing to occupy defensive positions behind you.

You command 3 Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment (ACR)

This consists of:

3 x Troops - Each with 2 Scout platoons (each of 6 Bradley CFV) and 2 Tank Platoons (each of 4 M1A1(HA) MBT).

Each Bradley carries a two man scout team (with 3 x AT-4).

1 x M1A1(HA) Company - Consisting of 3 Platoons of 4 tanks.

Each Troop has a Commander, XO, FISTV, 2 vehicle mortar section and an Echelon (1 x ARV, 1 x AMB, 2 x Tr)

This can be displayed graphically below:

26630347634_8336fc5724_o.png

Attachments/Detachments:

You have nine batteries of 155mm guns in support and access to CAS.

You also have under command "M" and "N" Troops, 4 Squadron each with 4 x AH-64A.

There are two ADM within your AO, placed by the Corps Commander. Detonation on his authority.

Civilians:

Large numbers of German citizens are fleeing Westward. These internally displaced persons (IDPs) are choking roads and making movement Eastward on the main routes very difficult.

The obstacles created by this press of people have been increased by vehicle accidents, abandoned vehicles and wreckage caused by air and artillery strikes.
It is expected that this movement will thin out in the next couple of hours as people seek shelter in cellars, etc. rather than move in the open as Soviet combat forces approach.

Mission: 11 ACR will deny penetration within boundary IOT, prevent the crossing of Stop Line ROUNDTOP.

Execution:

General Outline - The Regiment will conduct delay with three Squadrons deployed.

1 Squadron - West of Bad Hersfeld
2 Squadron - Corps Reserve
3 Squadron - North and East of FULDA
4 Squadron - Aviation support, reinforcing

Just a reminder that:

1. The CO for the mission can chop and change which units go where, so on the night they may, or may not, be arranged as above.

2. The CO may determine that a person per Platoon is better than a Platoon fully manned and two other empty Platoons.

Thanks for that, however I have to go through the previous posts where people nominated for slots and transcribe them (hence the comment about populating it).

Once I have those over I'll add yours.

I don't want people who asked for a slot weeks ago missing out due to more recent posts. :)

Also again as I said before people need to be prepared to be moved around. Unless language is an issue, I don't the CO will want a Platoon fully manned (e.g. Invader GREEN) and another empty. So those people may be moved around to flesh out other tank Platoons - maybe in Leadhorse GREEN in this example.

So I've done the straight transfer, now to try and fit in the "Baltic Block".

Just remember:

Its not going to work if one tank Platoon has two people in it and the rest of the Company is empty. :)

Certainly I'll fill slots based on people's preference but at the end of the day people may need to be moved to ensure the units are workable.

The first and third missions especially are designed to have well manned forward units and the reserve with a skeleton.

The CO will be given strong guidance to have depth so for example in the German scenario it might be (I'm not the CO and can't direct this):

  • 4./203 is the front Kompanie, 2./203 is behind that and 3./203 is in the rear.
  • On contact, 4./203 pulls back through 2./203 and 3./203 so 2./203 is in "front".
  • Then 2./203 pulls back through 3./203 and 4./203 so 3./203 is in "front".

In that case, if we aren't lucky in terms of attendance I suspect we'll need to initially man 4./203 and 2./203 in preference to 3./203.

As Kompanies are attrited people will be moved around so the "front one" is well manned.

So if groups want to be in a platoon with their mates, fine but my guiding principle is that you want to be in a Leo Platoon, not necessarily wedded to II/3./203 specifically to the exclusion of any other Leo Platoon. :)

Please review the listings to make sure I didn't miss anything.

Be aware that for some of you I've had to move you (e.g. 2 people wanted to command a specific Platoon, etc.).

To resolve that I've gone with "first in best dressed" and the person displaced has the same job but elsewhere - so if two people both wanted to lead a tank platoon, one got the specific platoon they asked for the other is still a tank platoon commander but a different tank platoon to the one they specified.

If that's a big issue ("Callsign XYZ has a special place as I used to fill that role in real life", etc.) let me know and I'll try and adjust to accommodate your needs.

Invader red 1 for me please.

Well you already asked for "Killer Red" - hence why you are there???

Also as I keep banging on - NOT EVERYBODY CAN BE IN THE ONE UNIT.

This is going to be a very short battle if Leadhorse and Killer only have one person in each.

Please confirm you want to be in Invader Red?

When is this game happening!

Well its in the Calendar and other details are here:

As to when exactly Mission 2 will run that's not well defined as its part of a series of three played back to back on the "night".

On 02/05/2016 at 6:53 AM, Gibsonm said:

No.

As I said at the start:

So, there are several games back to back.

It goes a bit like this.

Start - 1800 GMT

Brief on Mission 1 - 1800 - ??

Conduct Mission 1 - ?? + 120 minutes or so

End Mission 1 + ?? Minutes: Debrief, chat, toilet visit, ...

Brief on Mission 2 - ???? - ????

Conduct Mission 2 - ???? + 120 minutes or so

End Mission 2 + ?? Minutes: Debrief, chat, toilet visit, ...

Brief on Mission 3 - ???? - ????

Conduct Mission 3 - ???? + 120 minutes or so

End Mission 3 + ?? Minutes: Debrief, chat, toilet visit, ...

....

End activity.

From "Start" to "end activity" takes 10 to 13 hours (depending on number of missions, length of briefings, pause and resumes, ...)

A GUESS would be 2030 GMT.

But it might start earlier or later.

If you arrive and Mission 1 is still running we can pause and pick you up or you can listen in and wait for Mission 1 to end.

If you arrive and Mission 2 has started we can pause and pick you up.

Yes.

Mission 1 and 3 are done.

Mission 2 will be done real soon. :)

But the recon will be of little help to your planning if two of the units (in this mission at least) are parked in the deployment area because they are unmanned and there is no CO or Artillery player.

You want a bigger map than 50 x 40Km?

Sorry if by "bigger map" you meant a more enlarged  /zoomed in image, all I can suggest si you open a new file in the mission editor and insert a map using Falli's "010115_Fulda-Gap_1989.ter".

Also remember it is February so its snowing (not Summer). :)

Yeah confirms Invader Red (MD wants me there and I do not mind). And I am perfectly fine with having to be re-shuffled to where needed as needed as you keep banging on about, it's just that of course people prefer to have specific slots already picked before game time and we prefer to team up with certain people as we play much together and you are after all putting up a manning list (or something that looks bloody similar to one) so don't be surprised that people keep asking for certain slots.

OK great I'll move you.

If no one fills Bandit 6, there will be no one asking you guys to move. You will roll out the gate in the slots allocated.

I don't intend to be any Bandit call signs as I built the thing, so I hope people aren't assuming I'm the CO. :)

Killer red 4 please.  If I am needed more elsewhere, feel free to relocate me.

Done.

Just be aware that with KT's transfer you are no the only person in Killer Red so you may end up running it, as opposed to being a vehicle commander.
