Soviet Motorised Rifle Troops

Recommended Posts

A question for the Russian specialists.  When would Soviet Motorised Rifle Troops have transitioned, in general / on average, from their "classic" tan uniforms to camouflage uniforms, such as 'Silver Leaf' or others, in GSFG? This is so I can pick when to stop using the USSR theme, with its classic tan Soviet Motorised Rifle Troops uniform, in scenarios.  Any guidance gratefully received.

Cheers

Thanks Bond_Villian. Late 80s was my working assumption with the cut-off for khaki being ~1988.  Jartsev produced a great Silver Leaf camouflage uniform skin which I use for RU OPFOR from about 1989 until early 90s (I don't play much past about 1991 and then fast forward to contemporary). It's as good a starting point as any unless I see something more definitive.

Interestingly, this site (http://camopedia.org/index.php?title=Russia#Soviet_Camouflage_Patterns_used_by_Russia) says that the VSR "little oak" pattern camouflage uniform "...did not enter service until 1991, and then only initially by specialized units such as the Airborne Forces (VDV). By 1994, the pattern was being distributed universally to most ground units of the Russian Armed Forces...". Silver Leaf was used before this but obviously on a more selective basis.

Soviet motorized rifle troops never had uniform painted in dazzle patterns(KZS and KZM-P coveralls are not uniform items but, respectively a NBC defense and engineer gear); while naval infantry, airborne troops and  aircraft crews got  uniforms painted in "Butan" pattern at the  end of 80s.

Thanks Jartsev.  I found this photo when looking through my copy of 'T-64 and T-80' by Concord showing soldiers of 4th Guards Tank Division wearing khaki in 1990 and the following black and white photo from 'Main Battle Tank T-80' showing the same photo but, somewhat confusingly, dated 1989: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/71686353/Soviet Motorised Rifle Troops_24AUG16.pdf

So, I figure, based on this, Camopedia, and you, it's khaki uniforms for motorised rifle troops until about 1994 when VSR "Little Oaks" became common issue.  For elite VDV and Naval Infantry troops, it can be TTsKO "Butan" from 1988 onwards.

What's the default RU camo pattern with Steel Beasts?

Is it "Flora"?

Yes, VSR-98 also known as "Flora".

I noticed Splash has created an excellent early VDV-pattern uniform here (VDV folder in the download):

I've replaced the default VSR-98 "Flora" pattern in the RU mods folder with this but used an editing program to replace the chocolate boots with black to better represent the European theatre.

So I'll use 'USSR' until 1994 when I'll switch to 'RU' and the above VDV (unless they're representing Airborne or Naval Infantry, when I'll switch from 1991) or maybe the default VSR-98 "Flora" after 1998. For contemporary scenarios I use Jartsev's excellent EMR "Digi" skin in the RU mods folder from 2011 onwards, after it entered widespread use:

That's my OPFOR uniform timeline sorted!
