DS Setvolume failed message

Recommended Posts

Often, I have been seeing the following message on Steel Beasts after startup.

DS SetVolume failed

And I would then have no sound in the game. Rebooting the PC would correct it.

However, today, I could not get the sound back.

TeamSpeak is unaffected.

I have tried to update my sound card driver, but I get a message that it is current.

Could this be a Windows issue?

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

I did see this in the Logs file:

After the memory related messages, the DS Setvolume and DS Setfrequency messages would continue until I exited the game.

...like I wrote. That might provide us with additional clues.

So, one of you sent me a log file - thanks - but I can't make much sense from it as well. IMO the suggests that the source of trouble is "external" that is, not within Steel Beasts itself; this is supported by the fact that you cannot reliably reproduce the problem, but that it comes and goes.

Now, if it is not a sound card driver issue, it may be any other software that is interfering with the sound system. Also keep in mind that HDMI cable connections can interfere with the sound system. I can but suggest that you have a critical look at all the other applications that are running in the background that are somehow sound related. It may be a screen recording software (including NVidia's own shadow play or whatever it's called), it might be a sound after effects thing, or as mentioned it might be hardware related.

I'll pass on the log file to one of our programmers, or course, but I wouldn't bet on it that this log file gives us a specific clue.

I examined the debug data provided, unfortunately I cannot provide a concrete solution.

SB uses Window's "default audio device".  I have seen this problem on occasion due to the audio device being missing or being changed once SB is running(unplugged USB headset for example).  As mentioned, HDMI connections could also pose a problem as the available audio devices can change if the cable is un/plugged or if the monitor is turned on/off/stby.

Please ensure your default audio device is set correctly before starting SB.  If you're using HDMI to feed video and audio to your monitor, make sure the monitor is on before booting the system.
