Gary Grigsby´s Games - are they worth it ... ?

I have War in the West and War in the Pacific.  It depends on what your looking for Nike, but both are quite hardcore as to micro-management for one, and there is some love/hate in the community. To some War in the Pacific is the holy grail of all of GG´s games.

The AAR thread about the War in the East campaign on SimHQ a few years ago was very enjoyable. If nothing else, the game gave me hours of entertainment just by reading the "Oberkriegkaboomfuhrer's" weekly reports for more than a year, and I didn't even have to buy it or learn it to enjoy it. Of course that says nothing about the game as such, but maybe reading the thread is still worth your time to form an opionion.

Wow - reading the AAR of Oberkriegkaboomfuhrer.

Fascinating: almost like a documentary.

I like micromanagement. But it seems like this is a game that takes all your skills just to not fuck up too much.

The price is hefty, but like SB that is not a problem as long as there is content to match the price like SB

You can also wait and buy it when it goes on sale on Steam, if you don't have the burning desire to get it immediately. I've seen it at half-price back when I bought Command: Modern Air/Naval Operations (which was also conveniently half-price.)

I agree.

I got both of my GG games on sale this last Christmas (50%) at Matrix.  They had a "D-Day sale" (30% off) just recently (6/6/17), and Iam sure they will have a summer sale soon so stay tuned...

I bought Chains of War, but haven't had time to play it. I need to devote some time to get back into Command. It isn't a hard game to learn, but it is a perishable skill.

Very true that.

BUT that is after you lead us to Glorious victory tonight. Where we will make many active and potential terrorists inert per written order ... well maybe the order dont exactly say that in those word ...

But Ill improvise in the spirit it was written in...

Gives a whole new perspective to SB ... and to the utterly futile and unfruitful "discussions" about playable vehicles. Fortunately Ssnake is a clever man and will never reduce the amount of playable vehicles.

Honestly I couldnt see it to the end - got really motionsick after about 10 mins ... had to strengthen myself with a medicinal glass of Rum ...

I expect the Railcar to hit the terrorists ?

Maybe I was distracted by other games then, but nowadays the dilemma is finding the free time to prevail over the learning curve.

+1

I do enjoy detailed games, but I'm not a fan of having to spend days learning the interface, mechanics, and the UI just to play the thing. This isn't in reference to any games by Gary Grigsby, but more of a general comment.

Welll... For me its the REPLAYABILITY - I dont mind that it takes long to learn as long as I can keep playing it.

Like Supreme Ruler Ultimate or Hearts of Iron 3 with Black ICE Mod.

Or for that matter Steel Breasts (as Zaphod apparently renamed it)

"Steel Breast" :D She is as "Cold as Ice" as "Foreigner" would sing.

In "War in the West" and I imagen in "War in the East" too, you have the option to micro-manage or not.  The learning curve could be steep or not, it al depends if you want the best results in the outcome, then you will need further reading. Basic handbook is 35 pages, game manual 311 pages, and you also have two one-page guides (Air-phases).  I admit it is a bit overwhelming at first, like most good wargames to be honest.  Replayability yes, these games are long as hell, you could spend a year playing and still need more time...

I like how this gent plays WitW, and so you have a Idea of how many units you have to move in a given turn  (in this example it´s more air assets driven)...

Many thanks all for lots of brilliant input.

SHort version seems to be a clear YES ?

On sale (€40) I would say yes, if your really into wargames (on PC).  The new John Tiller "Panzer Battles Series", Battles of Normandy and Battles of Kursk are also good but a bit different, I have them both too...

http://www.johntillersoftware.com/PanzerBattles.html

The documentation included with the these two titles is a great read, designer notes etc.  John Tiller along with Gary G. are the grandfathers of wargames on PC.  I even have a couple JTS tiles on my phone for when I have to wait for a train, doctor or whatever B|

You can try out this excellent JTS demo while you wait/or not for a sale...

As War in the West, turns can be VERY looooong!!!!

You can also wait for TOAW IV to be out...

^_^ Steel Panthers are completely worth it (yeah, they are Gary Grigsby's games too). That is their most current versions - WinSPMBT and WinSPWW2. Quite detailed wargames they are, considering their age, and are still being updated by a fan dev team.

I played Steel panthers for years ... until they no longer could be mounted under my OS. But 40 dollas is just too much for a game that is more than 20 years old and shows it, for me at least.

AAaannnddd...

Its on summer sale - 50 % off:
