Its not a APC or a IFV guys, its a dedicated support vehicle 

the concept was conceived after the Russian army's disastrous experience in Grozny.

Where there troops were pinned down by snipers and machine gun teams there BMP IFVs were cannon fodder for the RPG/ATGM teams.

The only way they could advance was to blitz a grid with arty and use ZSU-Auto cannons with there high elevation to suppress there teams.

So the concept was to design a heavy support vehicle with considerable fire power it does not have dismounts

With the new designs the Russians are starting to field such as the T-15 i don't think the BMP-T 

Will be purchased in large numbers, IMO its a stop gap solution and probably cheaper then the new heavy IFVs the russian will be fielding.I believe a couple of BMP-t's were sent to Syria for evaluation.

It is not BMP-T but BMPT or rather BMOP as these designations are used together.

 

BMPT means Боевая машина поддержки танков or Tanks Support Fighting Vehicle, while BMOP means Боевая машина огневой поддержки or Fire Support Fighting Vehicle.

 

If the designation would be BMP-T it would means something like Infantry Fighting Vehicle - Heavy. Similiar to BTR-T which means Бронетранспортёр - тяжёлый or Armored Personell Carrier - Heavy.

it's a dedicated-anti-infantry city fighting vehicle. heavy allround protection makes it immune to RPGs from front and well-protected from the sides, and twin 30mm autocannons loaded with HE in a fast-spinning turret, without the limitations of turret traverse a tank would suffer makes it effective fighting threats in the city.  high elevation also means it can pick off targets on rooftops. 

vs IFV it obviously is superior in protection, as heavy MG fire and event the most primitive RPGs can easily take them out.

It's going to be years before the armatas will be ready for active service.  They are also buying upgraded T-90s and 80s.

As per recent informations from Russian MoD, T-14 MBT's and most likely other vehicles based on "Armata" platform will not get in to active service before 2025-2030's and no more than 30 will be made per year. Other new platforms like "Kurganets" and "Boomerang" also face similiar problems.
