Rolling Thunder 18 (RT 18) Predator's Gallop - Back story / Format

In the early hours of 12 SEP 90, the Range Warden for the northern area of the Department of Defence's Shoalwater Bay Training Area (SWBTA) in Queensland, Australia, whose home is located at PINE MOUNTAIN, heard a lot of tracked vehicle movement down towards the beach at SABINA POINT.

He set off to investigate and to read the Riot Act to whoever was down there and obviously had not informed Range Control of their presence, let alone had their booking cleared (if nothing else they were going to disrupt the fishing he had planned for there, later that morning).

Within 20 minutes he had rushed back and finally raised the Senior Range Warden at home on the 'phone.

The Senior Range Warden wasn't happy to hear the 'phone but he figured it must have been a bushfire or something similar that had broken out in the Northern Area of the Range, after all there were no range bookings and no field activity (Live or Dry) planned until the arrival of elements of 1st Brigade who were trialling the new ASLAV vehicle in a series of tracked Vs wheeled tests being conducted by 2nd Cavalry Regiment.

A Squadron, 2 CAV was equipped with the new ASLAV and Bison / ASLAV Type-2 vehicles, while B Squadron, 2 CAV retained the M113 based Light and Medium Reconnaissance Vehicles. A and B Sqn had identical structures, just different vehicles.

B Squadron was arriving later that day and later in the week elements of 1st Armoured Regiment (1 AR) and 5th/7th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (5/7 RAR) were also due to see if the new fangled wheeled vehicle could work as well with them as the LRVs and MRVs had. This was all he had in his schedule for the next month.

The schedule went out the window as the Range Warden, a retired Army Warrant Officer, conveyed in amongst a stream of swear words and phrases not intended for polite company, that an enemy force had come ashore near SABINA POINT and appeared to be consolidating prior to pushing inland to WILLIAMSON AIRFIELD and KAPYONG DZ.

When asked if he was sure and just hadn't had a beer before going to bed, the retired Warrant Officer, politely mentioned the "@$#%#%^ great holes" in his Land Rover and drew on his AFV recognition skills to confirm that BRDM-2, PT-76, BTR-60PB and some sort of T-55 variant with additional slab armour (he confirmed fume extractor near the muzzle) were crashing around in the scrub and more appeared to be coming from the LSTs he saw in "The Bay".

The Range Warden signed off saying he was grabbing some rations, his Safety Net radio and a few batteries and "going bush".

Rolling Thunder 18 - Predator's Gallop has begun ....

Terrain Brief:

"The Bay" is characterised by sub tropical Eucalypt forest with areas of Savanna created by overgrown cattle pasture.

There tends to be limited to good visibility at ground level, with better visibility at driver level. Vehicle Crew Commanders tend to be in the lower canopy and Drivers will often detect targets before Commanders.

The road network is limited with the best roads being well worn crushed gravel / pavement and from there deteriorating to graded dirt or worse.

Dust is an issue in the dry periods and mud in the rain periods.

There are limited opportunities to use long range guided AT weapons.

Manning:

Ideally of course three potential Blue CO's, or more, will shoot their hand up on reading this but I suspect not.

Several of the BG ANZAC staff will need to be on Red just to shepherd the AI (and besides they probably wrote the red plan) so I can't "volunteer" them.

If you think you might want to "CO" let me know and we'll ensure you are not fed to the wolves.

In terms of commanders per mission:

1. Probably can get by with 1 x "CO".

2. Will need 2 (1 x Recce, 1 x CT).

3. Will need 3 or 4 (1 x AS Recce, 1 x AS CT, 1x USMC Tk and 1 x USMC Mech). I know it will be late in the night but this is the "home for Tea and Medals" scenario. :)

More generally, happy to take people's preferences into account but there is no point in having a PL in a Coy fully manned and no one in the other two PLs.

Where possible I'll pair people up but please be prepared to be moved around.

If you want a man a "tank" I'll try and ensure you man a "tank" but it may not be a tank in your best buddy's Platoon.

Comms Plan:

We will use the Steel Beasts Teamspeak server for "chat" (may have different units on different sub channels to avoid clutter).

There will be a channel allocated to Excon (Blue / Red Co-ord).

Software version to be used:

Currently 4.023.

If 4.0XX comes out in say February, we will use that.

If there is a chance / good rumour that 4.XXX will come out the night before, we'll play it by ear and it will be my judgement call (in part driven by if we get a server version of 4.XXX before the event starts).

Great job, looks quite interesting. Just out of curiosity could a force really land on the shore there without the Australian defenses being alerted?

Not really, but otherwise it becomes hard to do Aust centric scenarios.

It then becomes something like - Army sits on beach and watches as RAN and RAAF destroy the landing force attempting to cross the Air / Sea gap.

The force appears to be Soviet / OPFOR based in terms of major equipments (T-55AM, PT-76, BTR60PB, and BRDM2 being identified).

These are the signature units for a Naval Infantry Battalion, probably reinforced with Divisional and Regimental specialist assets (Recon, ATGM, AARMD and AD) as well as fixed and rotary wing (attack and transport).

The second Echelon is expected to consist of a Motor Rifle Battalion (T-72 and BTR-80) but this does not appear to have come ashore as yet.

These forces appear to be consolidating in the bridgehead prior to breaking out.

The Immediate Objective for this force is assessed to be the KAPYONG / WILLIAMSON area (OBJ SILVER)

The Subsequent Objective for this force is assessed to be the GREY ROUTE / STANAGE BAY ROAD as the Main Effort with the COAST and NORTH SOUTH ROADS as Supporting Efforts

It is assessed that the Naval Infantry Battalion consists of:

1 x Tank Company, equipped with T-55AM
3 x Naval Infantry Companies, equipped with BTR60PB

It is assessed that the Motor Rifle Battalion consists of:

3 x Motor Rifle Companies, equipped with BTR-80

The landing force are likely to be supported by naval gun fire support initially and tube artillery once ashore as well as air support.

It is assessed that the attacks on the Immediate or Subsequent Objectives will be supported by a possible air mobile insertion using rotary wing and attack and transport.

Orders for Mission 2:

OPERATIONS ORDER – PREDATOR’S GALLOP

Situation:

Date: 19 SEP 90
Time: 1830 GMT/Zulu (0530 Local)
Location: THE POLYGON, Shoalwater Bay Training Area (SWBTA), Queensland.

General:

Seven days ago a Soviet epuipped Naval Infantry Battalion came ashore vicinity SABINA POINT. This was supported by a second echelon consisting of a Motor Rifle Battalion (T-72 and BTR-80) probably reinforced with Divisional and Regimental specialist assets.

B Squadron attempted to establish a line of observation to report and contain the landing force. They gave a good account of themselves but the injection of the second echelon, supported by a rotary wing attack on the KAPYONG / WILLIAMSON area, forced B Squadron to withdraw in contact suffering casualties.

Topography:

The AO is split into a Coastal area and a Inland area by a mountainous area running roughly NORTH SOUTH. There are limited mobility corridors running EAST WEST.

In the WEST, the WADALLAH CREEK will delay heavy AFV movement requiring crossing points to be located. The WADALLAH BRIDGE is the only heavy vehicle bridge in the sector. The NORTH SOUTH ROAD uses this and is the only high speed route.

In the EAST, the MOOLY CREEK channels heavy AFV movement, with the key crossing being the bridge at HUTTONVALE OUTSTATION. The COAST ROAD uses this bridge. There is a secondary route, RANGE WAY, which also runs NORTH SOUTH but is approx. 2000m inland from the COAST ROAD.

Enemy:

The enemy has paused after its initial success on a line running SW / NE roughly through HUTTONVALE OUTSTATION and the SEVENTEEN MILE GAP (refer graphic below).

They have occupied and begun to operate out of WILLIAMSON AIRFIELD.

The force comprises:

A Naval Infantry Battalion (-):
1 x Tank Company, equipped with T-55AM
3 x Naval Infantry Companies, equipped with BTR60PB

A Motor Rifle Battalion (-):
1 x Tank Company, equipped with T-72
3 x Motor Rifle Companies, equipped with BTR-80

It has been confirmed that this force is reinforced and supported by Divisional and Regimental specialist assets (Recon, ATGM, AARMD and AD) as well as fixed and rotary wing (attack and transport).

B Squadron was able to inflict some casualties on this force so it will operating at less than 100% strength.

It is assessed that the Naval Infantry Battalion is at 70% effective strength.

It is assessed that the Motor Rifle Battalion is at 80% effective strength (most losses in the MR Companies)

Latest Intelligence Reports indicate that they are no longer pushing towards the GREY ROUTE / STANAGE BAY ROAD, but have pivoted SOUTH and appear to be preparing to advance on both the NORTH SOUTH and COAST ROADS.

The Immediate Objective for this force is assessed to be the WADALLAH BRIDGE in the WEST and RASPBERRY VALE in the EAST.

The Subsequent Objective for this force is assessed to be THE POLYGON in the WEST and MOUNT ALEC in the EAST.

The enemy retains a sizeable amount of Offensive Support as well as his Rotary wing attack and transport capability.

The enemy has a Main Defensive Zone with a Security Zone providing a buffer forward.

Most Likely Course of Action (MLCOA): The enemy consolidates, then launches a balanced attack on both the NORTH SOUTH and COAST ROADS.

Main Effort: NORTH SOUTH ROAD
Supporting Effort: COAST ROAD

Most Likely Course of Action (MDCOA): The enemy does not consolidate, but instead launches an attack early to exploit the current situation on both routes.

Main Effort: NORTH SOUTH ROAD
Supporting Effort: COAST ROAD

Orders for Mission 3:

OPERATIONS ORDER – PREDATOR’S GALLOP

Situation:

Date: 10 OCT 90
Time: 1730 GMT/Zulu (0430 Local)
Location: WADALLAH, Shoalwater Bay Training Area (SWBTA), Queensland.

General:

RAAF and RAN interdiction of the Enemy’s sea and air lines of communication is starting to bite. The range staff member in his stay behind OP, has reported a pronounced reduction in fuel, ammunition and other stores coming ashore. This includes very few replacement vehicles to make up for earlier losses.

Topography:

The AO continues to be split into a Coastal area and a Inland area by a mountainous area running roughly NORTH SOUTH. There are limited mobility corridors running EAST WEST.

In the WEST, the WADALLAH BRIDGE has been secured, but the WADALLAH CREEK still imposes a constraint on AFV movement to the NORTH. The NORTH SOUTH ROAD remains the only high speed route.

In the CENTRE, there are two laterals that will need to be secured IOT provide flank security to both the WEST and EAST approaches.

In the EAST, the HUTTONVALE OUTSTATION bridge is yet to be captured and the MOOLY CREEK continues to channel heavy AFV movement, the COAST ROAD uses this bridge. There is a secondary route, RANGE WAY, which also runs NORTH SOUTH but is approx. 2000m inland from the COAST ROAD.

Enemy:

As a result of BG CAPRICORNIA’s attack, the enemy has been forced onto the defensive. They occupy a defensive position running roughly SW / NE (refer graphic below).

Earlier ground operations as well as Air and Maritime interdiction has resulted in this force being attrited to well under its initial strength on landing.

It is assessed that the Naval Infantry Battalion is now at 60% effective strength.

It is assessed that the Motor Rifle Battalion is at 70% effective strength (losses are expected to be spread across the Tk and MR Companies).

Latest Intelligence Reports indicate that while they retain an amount of combat power, this has been reserved to repel any Coalition attack with a view to retaining ground and using it as leverage during any political settlement.

The enemy retains a sizeable amount of Offensive Support, albeit with reduced ammunition stocks and his Rotary capability has been reduced due to a lack of fuel, spares and ATGMs. Some airframes appear to have been cannibalised to keep others flying.

The enemy has a Main Defensive Zone with a Security Zone providing a buffer forward.

MLCOA: The enemy will defend forward, attempt to inflict casualties early, reduce our will to fight and give ground grudgingly to ensure they retain a sizeable foothold for the negotiations.

Main Effort: COAST ROAD
Supporting Effort: NORTH SOUTH ROAD

MDCOA: The enemy will reinforce his security zone, conduct a mobile defence, withdraw under pressure and defend two main defensive positions centered on the WILLIAMSON / KAPYONG complex and the beachhead.

Main Effort: COAST ROAD NORTH SOUTH ROAD
Supporting Effort: NORTH SOUTH ROAD

SITREP:

Mission 1: Design underway.

Mission 2: Design about to commence now that Mission 3 almost there.

Mission 3: 1st cut done (AI does what its supposed to do). Now off to QA.

If frame rates too low, I'll have to cut MG teams from Red, Blue and Green to reduce unit density.

If that's required I'll likely do the same for Mission 2. I think we can get away with it in Mission 1, given the smaller scale, but that will need to await the results of its QA session.

These missions are not primarily "Infantry fights", too much ground to cover, so if I need to trim unit numbers, MG teams is where I'll start.

In addition, recommended skins list:

1. AS M113A1's (will require a degree of "squinting"):

2. Naval infantry:

3. Naval Infantry T-55AM:

Just remember:

A. The Rolling Thunder 18 series users the Desert Theme - feel free to install in "Woodland", "Autumn", etc. but they need to be in "Desert" to be seen in game.

B. The "OPFOR" is "USSR" so again feel free to put in "RU" too, but if they aren't in "USSR" you wont see the Naval Infantry or T-55AM in game.

C. Lastly, one for the rivet counters. All the OPFOR is one side. It would need additional players on OPFOR if the Naval Infantry were a different side to the Motor Rifle and Airmobile Troops. So if you use the "Naval Infantry" skin all dismounts will look like this regardless of which OPFOR unit they belong to.

SITREP:

Mission 1: Design under way.

Mission 2: Design completed. Scripting approx 30% complete.

Mission 3: Have built two versions (one complete, one with MG teams removed) for frame rate comparison.

Depending on results MG teams will be stripped from Mission 2 as well.

Ah. That's a bit unfortunate in this case. RU and USSR use different troop models. (RU uses "Russian_barmitsa" and USSR uses "Uniform1970RU". Infantry skins for one do not work for the other; different troop model = different skin file name. (The tanker skin included with the infantry package will work fine for either).

For the referenced infantry skin, I used the barmitsa model of the ru folder because that's the setup normally found in Panzer_Leader's scenarios employing naval infantry in this time period ... plus I personally prefer the barmitsa troop model for late soviet/early russian fed -- reserving the Uniform1970RU and its ussr folder for earlier time periods.

I could look into putting the TTsKO camo pattern on the Uniform1970RU model and maybe just offer it for download here for this event if anyone's really into that sort of thing. I wouldn't presume to suggest you change the opfor to ru.

Anyway, I'm thrilled at the suggestion some might get benefit from my skins in the campaign. Please take photos. :D

But be sure to follow Gibsonm's direction and not the readme (!!)

For the T-55: Put the skin and decals in mods/textures/desert/ussr. The AFV crewman would go in mods/textures/camo/desert/ussr. "Where we are, there is victory."
