I'm looking forward to the Kiowa Warrior and F-15E, although the latter is a Razbam. Hate them.

Oh yes, great times! At one point I was XO of our fleet, La Armada Invencible!

Nice! What fleet were you in?

I was in the 17th fleet (688i H/K) as LT/XO, also as CMDR/CO of the air wing (Falcon 4), and CPL of a land unit (Ghost Recon), forgot which one.

I dont remember unfortunately. I tried looking up at wayback machine, but the page recommends netscape 4 for best viewing :D

Wow! I tried to find any tracks of the Seawolves many times, but never found this!  Did see some comments on a user board by RADM Seademon and RADM LaBolla, and Ramius (from the SCX Team) some time ago, don´t know if you remember them.  They were talking about putting together a group together again but I never got a contact back.

I made a mistake, I was LCDR/CO for the Air Division, notice now that I saw some rankings on the page.  That was back in 2000, so yeah rough to remember somethings.

And the rooster:

Iam as Leutenent Mike "deep2112" Vila of the 16th fleet, I was moved from to the 15th to the 16th. now that I recall:

The opposite might not be true. If they release an AH-64, I'd be their first costumer.

EECH (Enemy Engaged: Comanche vs Hokum) with the allMods installed might be your friend 😉

Not quite Janes or DCS, but it has a very cool dynamic campaign system.

You just need EECH, not EEAH and the allMods installer + patch. You will have the AH-64 included.

GOG Store (cheap):

https://www.gog.com/game/comanche_vs_hokum

allMods:

http://eechcentral.simhq.com/index.php?title=Main_Page

Community (SimHQ):

https://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/forums/13/1/eech-eeah

I will be installing it today.

my problem with eech is the generic presentation, that is, there are no known or coherent force templates, organizations doctrines or behavior. all campaigns consist of disjointed small mixed units: one or two tanks with an air defense unit, and an infantry fighting vehicle, which the computer identifies as such and such mechanized brigade gathering

at road junctions and what look like nodes that attract them, then they just hang around for a while.

the campaigns are little more than wars of attrition- just throwing these units at one another as casualties mount on both sides. it doesn't matter what the enemy or allied force represent, they all use the same disorganized tactics, a relatively weak nation is as a capable as a relatively capable one, same tactics, equipment and organization;

in order to make any progress in the the campaign, the player should actually hijack every assigned mission and go beyond the stated objectives, otherwise the campaigns grind and grind to a stalemate, since the computer does not use large formations to overrun objectives or anything like that at all, just simply launch tit for tat airstrikes from both sides, then these small mixed platoons begin to gather wherever they can- which usually ends up getting them picked off. it's like world war I from the air. in fact, on every outing the player has the opportunity destroy enemy ground units, warships and aircraft from his aircraft, and it becomes a sort of rambo experience- it's playing doom from the cockpit. literally your helicopter is shooting down other helicopters, jets, sinking ships, bombing installations and wiping out ground vehicles in the same sortie.

then you understand how the computer generates opponents- literally, the airfields act as unit generators, ground vehicles will spawn out of them. i recall literally seeing this when i attacked an air field, units would start appearing and reappearing as they were being destroyed, so really the implied objective no matter what the assigned briefings say

is to capture every single airfield, since that deprives the enemy of producing more units. gets very repetitive.

from a combat standpoint i  still prefer hasbro's gunship!  - even though the flight model and weapons behavior can be a bit arcade like (you would even start missions already in the air without taking off), the force templates of the russians are more in line with real life, and the enemy occasionally would surprise you and react in ways you aren't expecting, i.e., attempt to escape destruction or bring a reserve unit to bear to bring you down. eech doesn't react or move like that at all, there's not really any attempt by the ai to sort you out like that, units just predictably gather at nodes and shoot at one another and just keep doing that.

I still have the original CD somewhere, and never took EECH as a "real" simulator in any of it´s mechanics.  It´s not Janes Longbow 2, but then it´s not Apache: Air Assault (Gaijin) either.  It´s sort of a in between thing so to say.  Then you have the dynamic campaign, it´s not Falcon 4 (BMS) grade of dynamic campaign, but at least you have one.  I can´t say how much is changed with the allMods mod installed, and or if the campaign system has been modded either, and it´s been way to long since I played the original to even remember how it works.

I mentioned it and posted EECH (moded) because @stormrider_sp misses a AH-64 simulation.  I would have suggested Janes Longbow 2, but 1- It´s difficult to buy/find now day´s, and 2- It´s not that easy to get it running in W10.  The problem is that there isn´t much to choose from, specially when you´re looking for a specific airframe simulation, in this case, the AH-64.  The whole helo/sim scene is quite sad at the moment, even the combat flight scene in these past years is.  So people try to make the best of what´s available, and EECH has open-code now which the community is keeping alive, again, that´s what we have today.

I was following a project some years ago that goes by Combat Helo - Gunnery, which did look promising, and even was up for Steam greenlight project, but never again have I seen/heard anything else about the dev or project...

Funny you mentioned Gunship, my first sim was Gunship 2000.

Thank you Red. I remember EAAH and then EECH. It was right after Janes Longbow. I had them all and I think I still have the CD for the Longbow 2 somewhere and ofcourse its manual. In fact I have all the manuals well kept: 688i, Longbow 2, M1TP2, Janes F-15E...

The one thing that I remember that really impressed me was when I first played Longbow 2. I jumped straight into a night mission and when I fired my first hellfire, man, that was PRETTY! I mean, back then, I was still living in Brazil. The 90s were a bit shit economically but beginning to recover, so I had the chance to travel to NYC and Boston, where I bought a 3DFX Voodoo 2 3d card, brand new and before that, you can imagine, not many kids in a third world country back then had ever seen 3d accelerated graphics. I was really amazed, completely absorbed. What I remember about Enemy Engaged series was how buggy they were. I couldn't play without crashing.

You´re welcome @stormrider_sp,

I sold my copy of Longbow 2 unfortunately some years ago, and for a high price (€70)!  I still have my copies of 688i H/K, Sub Command,  F-15 (Janes), Falcon 4, Flanker 2.5, F22 (DID), EF2000 (DID), and EECH.  Others got lost or whatever.  I now regret selling Longbow 2, as it´s the only good tribute to the AH-64 available today, and Janes did a good job on almost all the sims they put out.

Now that you mentioned the 3dFX Voodoo 2 3D card, It makes me think on ALL the money we been spending on PC gear after all these years! 🍆

If you´re (or anyone else) still interested in playing Janes LB2 on todays machines, see below two links that can help you out installing on W10, Iam using the first link, and so far, so good.

Flyboys JLB 2 Fix:

https://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/4075535/flyboys-longbow-2-windows-xp-vista-7-8-8-1-fix-v3

Make ISO files of both you´re original CD´s and use those instead (mount).

Do you remember after LB2, there was this guy Flexman, who tried to create a successor for LB2, Combat Helo?

https://www.leadwerks.com/community/games/combat-helo-gunnery-r9/

So close, but too far.

Yes, it´s the video I posted some post above 😉

The 90´s brought some cool sims to the community, but never again to date.  DCS (Lock-On) and that´s about it...

simulations from the DOS era were find at the time- there was nothing else to compare it to; the technology was at first wireframe graphics and flat colored and shaded triangles eventually having texture maps applied. in retrospect, your imagination filled in most of the blanks, because the graphics did not in any way replicate an environment that looks like anything real- it was all surreal, if you were in an environment that actually looked like that you would think you would be tripping on LSD. and this is where i refute the supposed dichotomy that graphics is distinct from gameplay- they both go together. with those very primitive environments you got very primitive results, the mechanics were primitive, not just aesthetically, but as a consequence of being aesthetically inaccurate, sparse and lacking information content ( a single 'tree' may be planted every so often on flat ground) the, primitive graphics therefore were fundamentally related to the way everything behaved. furthermore, it wasn't a case per se where they may have lacked graphics they made up for it in core gameplay: because more primitive microprocessors also couldn't cope with large amounts of AI units on the screen- you never saw individual infantry in squads, platoons, companies operating as either a larger threat or as a larger asset; simulations usually depicted infantry as lone missile or machine gun teams, right out in plain sight, that's all they were.  it is ironic that we seem to remember those more primitive states of the industry so much and don't by definition have nostalgia so much for the things we have now.

Yes, saw those videos some time ago. Personally I prefer Janes sonar suite.  But at least there´s a alternative to that.

Thank you. I saw it on subsim a few months ago. Downloaded, tried to install but something didnt work right and havent tried it ever since. That's a nice concept.

On the other hand, comparing Janes with Fast Attack, it's like comparing M1TP2's FCS with Steel Beasts'. Fast Attack is hardcore.

From what I saw on the videos you posted (Fast Attack), It didn´t seem that the TMA solution was to hardcore, he just keept updating TMA (time) with no other user input. Unless this TMA is automatic.  Which you can do same in Janes sonar suite, but if you choose to take command of the TMA station, then TMA solutions must be manually inputed by the player, and you better have a good understanding of how TMA works or you will be in big trouble!

So the rest gets an Idea of what we are talking about...
