Map Editor question

Basically you don't, not with the PE version.

The Height map needs the Pro version or some specialist ($) tools and the raw data.

Once you have a Height map you can add vegetation, buildings, roads, etc. to the accompanying Terrain map using the map editor.

If you ask politely and provide the details here:

There is every chance that someone will make the Height map for you - then you can create the required terrain file to suit.

Caveat: Information based on the "pre terrain update" world.

I have no idea what the process will be after the update is released, nor if asking for a Height map "now" will ensure it will arrive before the Terrain update arrives.

Which specialist tools do work SB?

Things like TerraTools from TerraSim (now owned by Bohemia) as an example

But for those to work you need:

a. The Budget. This is not $14.95 software.

b. The raw data.

c. The computing power to render the data.

I'm used to making maps for arma 3 for example, using sources like SRTM, Aster or more recently Alos Palsar 12.5m DEMs; fine tuning in progs like L3DT, qGIS, Global Mapper and Photoshop. Is this what you refer to 'raw data' and computing power?

TerraSim being a Bohemia pro software should be a bit difficult to get. Any other compatible software? As I understand it, SB, differently than Arma 3, has a very simple map structure. Its just a heightmap coupled to terrain map. Arma 3's process requires not only the heightmap to be worked the right way, but also, everything else in synch: Sat map, Mask map, Alpha map... So as I understand, for SB, it's just a matter of converting a heightmap into the right format. Everything else can be done (in a very clunky way at best) from within SB's map editor.

I'm sorry I haven't really looked into it as I either:

a. Post a request to the relevant area here (as mentioned previously).

b. Get one of my staff (or submit a request to have the Terrain Branch do it) to make the map or

c. Do it myself using SB Pro.

Well, it sounds as if you can prepare all the data in the way that Steel Beasts needs them for import - DTED file format for the terrain profile, SHP file format for all the terrain features (be they of the POLYLINE, POINT, POINTZ, or AREA type). The one thing that you can't do is to actually import the data as this is a classroom version feature. But I suppose that if you have the data prepared and offer them as a neat download, someone else might be willing to do this for you as it is a not very complicated process. The real work is in the data preparation, and it seems like you have mastered that.

Apart from the software ($ a fair bit), you'll need:

Recommended System Requirements

  • Operating System: Windows 7 64-bit, Windows 8.1 64-bit, Windows 10 64-bit
  • CPU: 2.8 GHz dual-core processor or better
  • Memory: 32 GB
  • Hard Drive: 5 GB installation, 1 TB project work space
  • Graphics: 4 GB, support for OpenGL 3.0 or higher
  • Misc: Administrative privileges on workstation, dual monitors
