Notre-Dame burning :-O

Recommended Posts

Yes, terrible news, watching a feed now.

I hope they can save / salvage some of the art inside and in due course rebuild the roof and restore the building.

… No

😥

No matter what they can possibly salvage then this is a historic, cultural and religious disaster.

Terrible news indeed.

Don't want to imagine something like this happening to "your place".

It's so sad to see history going up in flames 😪

One doesn't think that something that's "always been there" can burn down.

What a tragedy.

A crying shame.

How the hell did this happen.

One would have thought.

All safety and preventative fire measures would have been implemented.

I suppose hindsight is a wonderful thing.

It would have been nice to see Notre-Dame some day, because I have started to understand value of history, sadly it wasn't important to me and now it wont be same again. Hopefully they can salvage most of it.

I can't imagine how bad it would be, I saw an overhead shot last night showing the extent of the fire and damage to the roof and interior, to say it was upsetting is an understatement!

My heart sank at images of this timeless structure burning. This is certainly a great loss to the culture of mankind. I hope it can be renovated fairly quickly so that future generations can continue to enjoy visiting!

Well to clarify, and expand on, my original sentiment:

The majority of the building, and associated historical artifacts, have been saved by the prompt & tenacious actions of the French Fire Brigade.

And it is fortunate that no one was killed.

All the major historical artifacts are virtually undamaged (Aside from smoke damage)

It is all laid out here:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-47943705

Conclusion:

1) It was (most likely) an accident. Shit happens.

2) The Fire Brigade earned their pay (And round or 2 of beer)

3) It could have been much, much worse, see below.

Edit:

Here is an example of how bad an industrial accidents can get:

(in no particular order)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chernobyl_disaster

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_City_disaster

Edit 2

Grenny clarified the situation.

Hedgehog, just in case you didn't see it, Grenny's comment was refering to a post that was since deleted, not you.
