This one was a bit spontaneous / off the cuff as a response to Stuart's plea not to break Salisbury Plains (a map he made in 2011, can be found on our Downloads section). So he just put the target marker on that map to serve as proving ground for all future explosives work. 😈

So, the production value may be slightly sub standard, it's an afternoon's hurried work.

Okay, so some drew the correct conclusions:

I must admit, I have my doubts about the utility value of the guided unitary warhead for the MLRS in the Personal Edition. I cannot rule out that I'll have second thoughts to remove it, to be honest. 84km range is well beyond any limit for which the Personal Edition is designed, and I'm not 100% certain that we can adjust the user interface and the AI behavior in a way that no more than two missiles would be sent, and that AI observers will only pick point targets for this. Our rocket artillery AI is currently still rooted in cold war behavioral doctrine - empty your whole rocket pod for a fast reload, so you're ready for the next big mission in minimum time.

Times have changed, of course. GMLRS-U would never be ripple fired. So I reserve the right to pull this ammo type from the PE release, simply because we might not find the time to finish refining the work on it. But from the cratering video you can conclude that the unitary warhead is effectively the equivalent of a 250lb Mk 81 bomb. So it should be employed in a very similar fashion.

The GMLRS should be used by "H"-I mainly. Its a "70 mile sniper" to take out point targets with a single missle. I'm confident in the esim teams abilties...but giving the AI the ability to pick targets for that...is a challenge.

But it would be a realy valuable asset in asymetric scenarios (if everything is fixed with it)

Someone egged me on to find out how many craters you can have in a given area.

Turns out, beyond a certain crater density no more craters get added.

Nevertheless, I suppose "a lot" is good enough for the moment.

Interesting to compare to this drone footage of an actual artillery strike [Twitter]: https://twitter.com/SamuHaa/status/1133683103958994945

I originally thought the black craters were a little "theatrical" but apparently not (I should have known better).  Great job eSim!

You want dirt clogging the gun barrel in SB now, causing the gun to explode when you fire it? No one will complain about that... nooooooo.  🤣

Merely pointing out a minor lapse by a seasoned and experienced Panzer Zugführer

😁

I guess this falls under the ultra realistic category, along with barrel strikes and no F8 view. 🤔
