Wax Savage
Hi guys, I just went to Windows 10 loaded into a new computer. Been installing all the Steel Beasts stuff. I installed SB 4.161 without problem. I also want to keep a copy of 4.023 in order to use the 4.023 mission and map editors. Today I made repeated attempts to load 4.023 onto the new Windows 10 system. I keep getting the following message from the SB installer: "Required Windows Update Item KB2999226 is not installed. Please see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2999226 on how to acquire and install it!" Window 10 won't load the above referenced update. It was released for Win 7 in 2015 and Win 10 rejects it. Any thoughts on how to get 4.023 installed on Windows 10??
Lt DeFault
There were numerous threads about this happening on Win 7. I remember because it happened to me. I seem to recall some type of fix being posted in one of those threads.
Jartsev
1) Please check, if your computer has Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015 installed. -If no, then get installer here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2977003/the-latest-supported-visual-c-downloads -if yes, then uninstall it and re-install using fresh installer obtained via link above 2) Use Windows Update to download and install KB2999226 P.S. Installation(or re-installation) of VC++ 2013 may be required too

Wax Savage
Hi guys, Thanks for the reply posts. After double checked the health of my windows 10 operating system I attempted repeatedly to install Windows Update KB2999226 . The Windows operating system aborts the installer program and displays the message: 'The update is not applicable to your computer' I'm guessing that the SB 4.023 installation will continue to search for confirmation that KB2999226 has been installed. Unless there is a workaround to fool the SB installer, I will not get 4.023 onto a Win10 computer.

Yes Ssnake, I have every version from 2005 through 2019 installed. Even so, as soon as the SB 4.023 installer starts it then stops and complains that KB2999226 is nowhere to be found. Of course, I Can't install KB2999226 because Windows 10 rejects it.

Wax Savage
Hello Ssnake, thank you for posting the link . The info on that link suggests that the KB2999226 update may be successfully installed using the update appropriate for the operating system (Windows vista or 7, 8 etc.) and installing using a Windows standalone installer. I have attempted to install every version of KB2999226. All were stopped as not applicable to your computer'. FYI all KB2999226 versions are available at in the Windows UCRT package. Of the ten update files enclosed in the UCRT package none of the KB2999226 Update files are targeting Windows 10. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2999226/update-for-universal-c-runtime-in-windows The Windows UCRT package consists of the following redistributable packages: Target Operating System MSU file X64-based Windows 8.1 requires S14 update(KB2919355), Windows Server 2012 R2: Windows8.1-KB2999226-x64.msu X86-based Windows 8.1 requires S14 update(KB2919355): Windows8.1-KB2999226-x86.msu Arm-based Windows 8.1 requires S14 update(KB2919355): Windows8.1-KB2999226-arm.msu X64-based Windows 8, Windows Server 2012: Windows8-RT-KB2999226-x64.msu X86-based Windows 8: Windows8-RT-KB2999226-x86.msu Arm-based Windows 8: Windows8-RT-KB2999226-arm.msu x64-based Windows 7 SP1 or greater, Windows Server 2008 R2: Windows6.1-KB2999226-x64.msu X86-based Windows 7 SP1 or greater: Windows6.1-KB2999226-x86.msu X64-based Windows Vista SP2 or greater, Windows Server 2008: Windows6.0-KB2999226-x64.msu X86-based Windows Vista SP2 or greater, Windows Server 2008: Windows6.0-KB2999226-x86.msu Edited November 18, 2019 by Wax Savage
Members Ssnake
Maybe we need to accept that a patch for Win 7 and 8 simply doesn't apply to Windows 10 anymore... But of course, this still begs the question, did the Visual Studio C++ 2013 and 2015 redistributables properly install on your system. At the end of the day, that's the thing that counts in this context. I can but recommend to search for answers to that question.

No, you can't apply KB2999226 patch manually by running installer downloaded from MS website. This not how it works with Win 10- you should use Windows Update feature integral to OS(Start>Settings>Update&Security> Windows Update> Check for Update). And as I wrote previously- very likely re-installation of VC++ is needed. I just successfully installed v.4.023 on computer which has just VC++2013 and 2017 installed (both x64 and x86 versions).

Hello Ssnake, question: for this scenario let's assume that VC++ 2013 ~ 2017 are installed and healthy. Does the SB 4.023 installation code recognize that VC++ 2013 ~ 2017 are available and proceed or, is the code also looking for (and demanding) MS Update KB2999226 regardless of the fact that VC++ 2013 ~ 2017 are available to be accessed? Wax Savage
Hi Ssnake, Jartsev and Lt Default, nothing yet. I uninstalled VC++ 2013 and 2015. Shut down computer, restarted and installed fresh copies of the VC++ 2013 and 2015 executables. Started the SB 4.023 install.exe and it opened all files to a temp folder in preparation for installation. Promptly stopped with the same... "Required Windows Update Item KB2999226 is not installed. Please see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2999226 on how to acquire and install it!"

New (win10) updates were downloaded and installed today. I called Microsoft Technical support. I asked if there was a way to install KB2999226 onto a windows 10 computer. I asked for any 'workarounds', cheats etc to fool windows 10 installer and allow kb2999226 to execute. The MS tech asked around in her group and in upper echelon tech support. She said there was no way to install a win 7 update into a win 10 system to satisfy some old program software. The tech said that the developer of the software (eSim) would need to update the software to accept win 10. Guess I'm s.o.l. as far as using S/B ver 4.023 unless I'm willing to maintain a second computer with a Win 7 operating system.
Members Ssnake
It may actually be that the redist version of VS 2015 is not the same as the one that "the current" Windows 10 uses (it seemed to work a while ago). We're investigating.

I have another computer that was a win 7 that was upgraded to win 10. When it was a win 7 system SB 4.023 was installed. SB 4.023 was already on the disk when the disk operating system was upgraded to win 10. SB 4.023 runs fine on the upgrade. It will not do a clean install on a Win 10 system.
