Request: VIZMOD

Recommended Posts

Problem

We do not have a playable T-series tank with a thermal optics package that will support Head to Head or Head to Red scenarios with a Warsaw pact OPFOR.

Request

Is there a way to develop a VIZMOD (visual modification) texture package that makes a Western MBT look like a T-series tank?

I know we can't change a model, but I also know that alpha channel manipulation can potentially be an option.

I also know that this may affect hit boxes.

Is this possible?

i do not think it would be worth the erffort. the early playable  leopard 1 tanks have dimensions closest to the smaller russian tanks, but not the armor model, nor the ammo options, which of course you cannot change. with a little imagination, the df-30/df-90 and centauro piranha based vehicles look similar to some chinese wheeled ifvs and mobile assault guns;  the non heavy armor versions of the m1/m1a1 probably look closest and may arguably perform closest to a chinese type 96 with some cosmetic changes, i do not think however anyone will have the skill to mold a playable nato tank to look like a russian t-90 or armata tank by messing with alpha channels- it works better for minor changes, extremely difficult to make a box turret look pan shaped with reactive kontakt armor attachments, say

The classroom version has a "tank masking" option that does what you're asking for; I see no other way to achieve it. Simple texture manipulation alone can't change the differences in shape.

Is there any chance that option could be made available in the home edition? I can understand you may have commercial reasons to maintain the differences between the two versions.

Would I be correct in assuming the everyone would be needing to run the Classroom variant for this to work?

That is it would not be possible to edit the scenario on the Classroom version to achieve what @Apocalypse 31 is after and then give it out to people running only Commercial host and clients?

Yes, and Yes.

So this is, for example, an M1A0 using the T80 3D model in game?

Yes. You can pick a different model (within the same vehicle class) to make your vehicle appear like it to other parties (except when you're very, very close). So you couldn't mask a Biber bridgelayer as a BMD-1 or an M1 as a BTR.

How about taking the existing playable T-72B1V, slapping the T-80U armor model and external 3D onto it, and adding the option to toggle the current daysight views for the TC and gunner into a modern IR sight view?

You don't even need to change the way the fire control system works, that upgrade alone will make it far more deadly as a player vehicle.  Slap a title on it like "OPFOR-MBT" and be done.

...well, a "masking feature" OPFOR tank, that has the TIS and FCS functions of a Leopard2A4, and the external look of an T-72xx

Is this dead ?

If so can we revive it ... ?

For OPFOR work I need a skin for the LEOPARD 2A4 to make it look kinda like a T-72B3

it's nigh impossible. you could visibly 'erase' parts of a tank like a fording tube, track skirts, smoke launchers, even the main gun or any extremity, but i don't see any realistic way of erasing profiles in order to make a tank resemble another with such radically different profiles

I think that the Leopard 1A5 would be a better candidate for TIR Opfor tank. In my eyes, the main issue of a vizmod using the Leo 2A4 is its squared turret compared to the geoid T-XX turrets. The hull could be textured to look similar, but the turret would be very difficult.

I respectfully do not think the Leopard 1A5 is a good candidate, let alone a better candidate.

It has much worse armament and far worse armor, when compared to the T-72B3 and up, which as stated was the goal.

I WILL use the Leopard 2 as it is the least bad solution. As we as stated many times before need a modern OPFOR vehicle.

I guess I will soldier on with what I have.

I feel your pain. I would also love to see T-XX with TIR in Steel Beasts. One option that I think would work great is if we could give thermal sights to a unit via mission editor > right click > options > add thermal sight, just like we can do with active defense systems.

Yes I concur - but not sure it would solve the issue with regards to manhours bieng sunk into a project like this.

Which is why I would be happy like a kid a X-mas for a T-72B3 or T-80BVM, without any internals á la the Challenger 2. But we will see.

OpFor is what you define as OpFor. You could have M1s fighting Leopards or Challengers. That you prefer to have a Russian made tank is relatable - I'd like to have one, too - but it is a classic 1st world problem. In the meantime I have to manage at least half a dozen other open construction sites. With six programmers, our days only have 48 hours. And I can't assign every programmer to any task, we have specialists.
