Italian-Polish tank?

Recommended Posts

The Italians want to build a main battle tank together with other countries, competitive to the German-French design under development. Poland is among the countries they offered to cooperate. “The Italian Ministry of Defense turned to some EU countries, including Poland, with a proposal to cooperate on a project on land platforms. The Ministry of National Defense is analyzing this proposal, ”informs the Ministry of National Defense.

It is possible that Spain, Italy and Poland will build a new main battle tank together, which will replace the long-serving 3rd generation machines in a dozen or so years - Leopard 2 used by Polish and Spanish soldiers, and the Italian Ariete C1.

Our southern allies, just like Poland, have long been striving to join the program of building a next-generation main battle tank called Main Ground Combat System, which has been implemented by Germany and France for several years . With their efforts to date unsuccessful, the government in Rome wants to build a competitive multinational consortium using its defense industry. - We are looking for potential partners to whom we will propose a coherent project aimed at developing a joint, European vehicle - explained Italian Deputy Defense Minister Angelo Tofalo to Italian parliamentarians in early October.

It's awkward that everybody seem to be moving towards replacing their current armored versions except for the British. Either they have something on the way, or they're tied to an american solution post Abrams/Challenger, or bankrupt.

UK will upgrade Challenger 2 within LEP program. As I heard they consider very seriously this solution from Rheinmetall.

Which is based on basic LEP upgrade.

Actually, the MOD is considering the cancellation/scrapping of tanks all together.

In favour of alternative platforms for fire support.

Um no they aren't.

That proposal was a planning option.

It has not been (and likely wont be) seriously pursued. But that doesn't provide a story that sells.

Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. They are not replacing it. It's just an upgrade to some of their current tanks which now are more than 20 years old.

to be fair, the challenger is still a good platform for further upgrades. the running gear is sturdy enough to carry 70+ tonnes into battle. with a new powerpack, RWS turret with a rheinmetall 120mm or 130mm, and crew in hull, and you have a potent challenger to the armata.
