Hedgehog
Wonder why they don't just call it the A3?

That's a good question- Because there are no improvements to the model of the M1A2; these are improvements being made within the design of SEP (System Enhancement Program).

Ah so if they change the Gun (again) that would be an A3

iamfritz
In all the Facebook tanker forums they're ragging the 3-man crew concept. "Engineers don't understand we're in there for a month or at least days at a time" "One less man to help with maintenance" "Since when were turret penetrations an issue?" etc.
Members Ssnake
Engineers understand that very well, it's just that there isn't much of an alternative when you think of the upper weight limit, and the protection levels demanded by the army. Short of ungodly expensive wonder materials like diamond, or straight from the fantasy realm (mithril, unobtanium FFS), the only feasible path is a reduction of internal volume, and with it, crew numbers. Doctrine must adapt. Add a maintenance platoon to the company to help out the crews, and with local security, as a thought.

Or as the French did add an APC with a second crew 🙃
BlackDeath
Maybe is it also a step toward no crew at all
iamfritz
Saw a video about it at an armor tech conference. The GDLS rep said it's a technology demonstrator, not the nest model Abrams. They're going to give a couple to the Army to see what they do and don't like about it, and finesse it accordingly. Oh, and that 30mm CROWS can point straight up and take out drones and other inbound projectiles.
CalAB
To me it seems like a logical move. With what computers can do now replacing or automating some functions that are currently the task of a crewman makes perfect sense. CNC machinery can do some amazing things now, making a leap from manufacturing to occupying a crew slot would be a breeze.
