Hackworth
probably T-80s backed up by T-72s (see the recent war in Georgia). T-90 is too expensive for them to field all of their category A units -- yes they produce it, but they export it.question 2; i could tell you, but i'm busy in search of the_List.
Mogwa
My guess is it would be T-90s if the could help it. T-90s are simply upgraded T-72s. Since the word T-72 had come to mean "smoking wreck in the Iraqi desert" in many peoples minds, the new variant was called the T-90. I read that they decided they couldnt afford to build both models(T-72and T-80, quantity vs "quality") Anyway, the decision was made to go with quality T-80s, and then the T-80 performed poorly in Checnya, or at least it was perceived to have performed poorly. At that point the decision was made to switch to the T-90. Both tanks are still found in service and new prototypes are always in developement.
mpow66m
is it true that the main gun is 152mm?
GH_Lieste
is it true that the main gun is 152mm?Try 125mm
mpow66m
Most information about this tank is speculative. Although no concrete information has been released, various websites have published descriptions and illustrations of a novel design, with a tank gun in a remotely-controlled mount, variously reportedly as of 135 mm or 152 mm calibre (larger than the 120–125 mm guns in current main battle tanks).taken from wiki
Hackworth
is it true that the main gun is 152mm?there is a model they have experimented with that has a gun this size -- i believe it's based on the T-90. no point in my opinion...they should shift that weight to better protection, not a bigger gun.like i said, if you want to see how it is in practice, how it is now, then google War in Chechnya and War in Georgia and watch the videos -- start with . there is a ton of media out there on both of these wars. note, also tons of propaganda, so take some things you hear or is reported in it's context and decide for yourself. but, tons of great war footage...here... try this... i saved this search result for some reason:http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=grozny+war&www_google_domain=www.google.com&hl=en&emb=0&aq=1&oq=grozny#q=grozny+war&www_google_domain=www.google.com&hl=en&emb=0&aq=1&oq=grozny&start=50
Hedgehog
is it true that the main gun is 152mm?You might have this confuddled with their arty calibre. They did do a SPG in this calibre, based on the T-90/T-72.
Hackworth
naw, he's right. they recently experimented with a larger caliber gun on either the T-90 or T-80 -- i'm pretty sure it was the T-90.
Hackworth
it might be called the T-95. I read in another forum that it was based on the T-72 chasis (reason being T-80 is more expensive to build). Przezdzieblo New Member Private Join Date: Feb 2008 Posts: 5 Tank from that photo is not T-90 variant, nor with 152 mm gun. It is Object 187 (like said name of file), experimental T-72 development, which finally would have chance to became new Soviet tank (T-88, later T-90), but was abandoned for cheaper are more conservative Object 188 --> real T-90 google it up. i have some photoshoppin' to do

I guess some of the ground and air prototypes they have been playing around with would be fielded along side their current units. As we know from history, Russia has an enormous industrial capacity, together with alot of sharp brains.
