jens198
Hi,while searching for infos on the NTC at Ft Irwin I stumbeld upon a "OBSERVER CONTROLLER HANDBOOK". Inside this document are some information on "Operations Group Common Geo-terms". Example:CENTRAL CORRIDORN. WALL C. CORRIDOR S. WALL C. Tacbat
They look like MGRS numbers to me.
jens198
They look like MGRS numbers to me.But didn't have MGRS-coordinates always a letter for the zone? I'm confused.Jens
Mogwa
But didn't have MGRS-coordinates always a letter for the zone? I'm confused.JensTechnically yes, but if the area is all the same group(IE: AB 12345678) then its usually left out.Anyway, those are MGRS grids. Open the map editor in SB and then open the NTC map and check the grids in the lower right corner. You will see 3 groups of 4 numbers. The first two are the grid reference and the 3rd set are the elevation. If you goto 1340 2710 then, Boom! your at hill 1297. Goto 2000 2000 and there is Nelson "lake", etc. Edited June 6, 2009 by Mogwa

Tacbat
Did you try NU or NV?A complete MGRS grid would be something like: 18TUP12345678
Mogwa
Thats correct, but unless there is a border in the operating area, radios calls and briefings usually just give the numbers. They always emphasis the grid reference in schools, but at unit level it kinda disappears.Anyway, it appears that there is an area where the map sheets join on the NTC map, so you can see how much it gets used. jens198
Thanks guys, now I can find my way around the NTC. I even found a nice plugin for Google Earth that shows me lines for the MGRS coordinates.http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=490585Jens
Ralphie
Thanks guys, now I can find my way around the NTC. I did a quick check on some military maps of Fort Hood and Sarajevo, and the gridlines look pretty damn accurate, based on just the couple of sample grids I looked up. Again, let me reiterate: Freakin' SWEET! :drink:
