Elite armoured units

OK here is a completely off the cuff question. I was watching an episode of "greatest tank battles", utter sensationalist bullshit. However it was talking about Patton's 4th armoured division? and referring to them as an "elite armoured unit". It made me wonder, who are the elite armoured units in today's military forces and what earns them the term "Elite"?.

This unit disbanded just before I joined however there were many of their ranks who went back to their parent regiments who I served alongside. To a man they were the embodiment of professionalism.
