GH_Lieste
Without knowing anything better - looks like a unit coordination method - allowing left and right antenna (and therefore turret direction) to be observed, even if the vehicle is turret down (tall crops/dust)?This could allow the other vehicles to orient on the turret of the first vehicle to spot enemy without quite as much confusion as could exist.
Homer
Ive seen that on a few pics, but have never figured out what they are used for... marking the antenna or what? They put chem-lights in there.
DemolitionMan
I appreciate the effort and the research. Still it's a little dissapointing at the lack of pics for the Canadian stuff. I am on to the LAV III and Leopard 2A4+ for the Canucks now. The LAV III is bad ass. Have some pics but as for the Leopard 2A4 its all in Afganistan and tan. I hate tan.If you can, get a copy of "The Maple Leaf in Germany: Canadian Army Forces 1951-1993": http://www.amazon.de/Ahornblatt-Kanadische-Heeresstreitkr%C3%A4fte-Deutschland-1951-1993/dp/392848348X/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1325787376&sr=1-1The author Peter Blume was one of the many "80s German countryside maneuver spotters" and this book contains tons of photos mainly from the late 70s to early 90s period. All wheeled and tracked Canadians vehicles are extensively covered, including all versions of the M113 in use. The camo schemes and colors vary alot, some tracks feature darker greens, some lighter, blurry and sharp edges, and some DO feature the attempt of cheap NATO CARC replacing the lightest green with brown. My favorite however is the NATO 3-tone M113 TUA with a Maple Leaf adjusted to the color scheme-that looks just cool. I have that book but no scanner-and photographing the pages sucks mostly.

RecceDG
Here's some pics: 3 views of the new Leo2 in green (shame about the one idiot blocking the view). A troop of Coyotes on the pad (note field-expedient callsign markers on the turrets) and a close-up of 23, my TLAV "BETHANY". Once upon a time, we had enough vehicles and the VOR rate was low enough that a crew would be assigned one vehicle and you could paint the callsign on. Nowadays, vehicles get rotated around and it is more common to see removable placards, callsigns marked out with gun tape, chalk, or even scratched into the dirt. Vehicle naming is kinda old school and doesn't always happen. If it does though, 99% of the time the name starts with the first letter of the sqn. I have had ARRAS in A Sqn PEIR (and again in A Sqn Armd School) BETHANY in B Sqn Armd School, DASTARD in D Sqn WR, and THUNDERBUS in D Sqn WR (the driver knocked the exhaust system off and it was very distinctive) If you want to make my wife over the moon, make the Leo2 be a B Sqn tank (21, 22, 23, or 29) and name it BETHANY. And if you want to make it really cool, stick one of these on the front fender: http://www.veteran-graphics.com/images/image_canadian_military/royal_canadian_dragoons_s_small.jpg DG

I'm the "5" on BDE now so I'm not even "in" the Regt. Thankfully no one has called me a "PONTI" yet (at least within my earshot).
