2.640 Is not a Patch

It's a completely new version of the game. Un-install any older version of the game before installing it.

It's an easy mistake that a lot of people have made, including myself. All "Upgrades" are new versions of the game. An "Update" is a patch. I think...

I hope the title of this thread will catch someone's eye before they make this mistake.

Yes, it can be confusing. The next release in the near future will definitely be an "update" to put over the existing install, a free bug fix basically. However, all paid upgrades are always new installs because so much content changes between upgrades. Installing a new upgrade over an old version of SB will cause all sorts of odd effects.

Maybe if "updates" were instead referred to as "patches" then it might be less confusing to people... ;)

So can the powers that be put something up along the lines of:

"If you paid for it, uninstall any earlier version first"

This might cut down on the number of similar support questions.

(Of course if you don't read the release notes in your enthusiasm to install it, you probably aren't going to read anything here either - until after its "broken". :)).

There is a pretty clear policy at work with eSim Games:

  1. Patches:
Patches contain only bug fixes, nothing else. They will rarely be released. If so, they are to be installed over an existing installation of the latest previous release
  2. Updates:
Typically, one or two updates will be released between major upgrades. There will be no series of incremental updates. That means, you may install an update over an already updated or patched installation, but every update will work with the base upgrade for which it was made, and will incorporate all previous updates.
  3. Upgrades:
You pay for them. They are standalone installations. Since they usually incur major changes in code, file formats, and artwork, the general rule is that previous versions should be uninstalled first, and that you need to clean out the mod folder.
  4. Rule of thumb:
    a) If the download is larger than 700 MByte, it's an upgrade
    b) If the download size is between 20 and 700 MByte, it's an update
    c) If the download size is small, it's a patch

Everything that we put up for download will be accompanied by Release Notes.

Everything that you need to know for a successful, pain-free installation will be described in them.

Therefore, ignore the Release Notes at your own risk, and be rightfully ridiculed in public for not reading them if you have trouble. :diable:
